I'd be using 5w30 as recommended unless it was burning lots of oil.

5w40 fully is the recommended oil for these, I would stick to that OP

    The Castrol website says otherwise.

    Don't use 10w40!!

I have an 02 GTI, same engine.

Either 5w30 or 5w40 would be good. VW will sell you either,

If you would have the use for a 20 litre drum, I find the local VW dealer cheapest for it. 20 liter drum of 5w40 works out around €100 inc VAT. I'm not a mechanic so no trade discount.

I use 5w40 on mine as it burns a little oil. 292k kms so not bad!:pac:

Dunno about not using 10w40. I did a Google search and a lot of guys are using similar to me semi 10w40 once the miles are high. I only do about 5-7k mile per annum!

If you're only doing 7k per year why are you skimping on oil? Oil is cheaper than turbos.

I'm not skimping. My new mechanic used 10w40 and I want to know if it's the correct type of oil....

If I were you, I'd get it changed again.

These engines have a problem where the gauze in the oil pickup blocks up, causing oil starvation to the top end.
Result = blown turbo and possible camshaft / head damage

Google "1.8T Sludge Problem" and you'll see.

This tends not too happen if the recommend oil is used, and changed frequently.

10w40 would not be considered adequate in my books as it's only semi-synthetic.

10w40 is much cheaper than 5w30/5w40 so maybe that's why they used it - only guessing though.

Well, your mechanic is skimping on an engine that's oil sensitive to start with. Go back to fully synthetic 5w30.

5w40 is what should be used, semi synthetic if that is what has been used before or fully synthetic if that's what's in it now.

There's no way I'd put semisynthetic oil in that engine or any turbo engine for that matter.

That's what was used from new in 1.8t's. Remember the earliest of these were back in 99.
My 2003 which had a full main dealer history was run on shell helix 5w40 semi synthetic from new. I used semi syn from there on in a remapped engine with zero issues for over 60k miles.

Hence the sludge in the strainer issues... Oil technology has changed considerably since 2003 never mind 1999. Ultimately it's your choice OP, but if it were my car I'd be using fully synthetic.

The sludge blocking the oil pickup is also a problem that effects the longitudinal mounted 1.8T's in the A4,A6, Passat etc more than the mk4 based cars.

My car never had sludge issues, the engine was spotless and had perfect oil pressure.

Tossy covered the sludge issues so no need to repeat.

Fully synthetic all the way for me, certainly not 10/40 semi synthetic if it was my car. I don't skimp on oil.
