Converting open fire to electric

Hello I'm seriously considering the above
My main reasons are for the convenience
I love the open fire but I feel it's messy and it's ruining my interiors due to dust and just being messy to clean

I've seen some gorgeous electric fires and surrounds and I'm really tempted

Would I regret it? Is it more costly to run an electric fire? Is the heat the same?

The main reason I wouldn't do it is because if the power is off, you have no heat at all. That's such a rare occurrence I'm not sure it's a good reason to keep a real fire, but I still remember the winter around 2010 where we had no electricity for 5 days during the snow, and we were bloody glad of the fireplace. That was 5 days out of about 20 years though - the other 99.7% of the time we can use central heating :)
