My sister is buying a new car. The plan is to give me her car and she takes mine to scrap it as part of the scrappage deal.

Do I need to change the logbook over into her name?

My tax is up since the end of January. I dont wanna tax it until its being scrapped as you cant just pay for one month, have to pay for the three. If its all sorted in two weeks time, can i go to the tax office and pay the one month that will be owed? Reckon the guards will leave me off if they stop me in the next two weeks?

Do most dealers not have small print saying that the person putting the car in for scrappage has to have owned it for 6 months too? Hyundai definitely have it as part of their terms and conditions.

    Not just that but also:
    Qualifying trade-in vehicles must:
    - be registered in the Republic of Ireland for at least 1 year.
    - have valid NCT and road tax certificates.
    - be currently insured and have been previously insured 4 months prior to trade-in.

The UK are introducing a scrappage scheme for older more polluting diesels.

I'm pretty sure that our gang will introduce something similar in the next budget or the one after that.

They'll want us all driving Euro6 diesels, and electrics, and anything Euro4 or less could be eligible for the scrap heap.

Best to wait and see what the UK come up with, then wait for it to be copied here.

Richy, out of general curiousity, what Make is the new car she's buying? (ie, Ford, Toyota, Honda etc)?

I was able to use a family members car as my trade in, and gave my car to my family member. I was told it was fine as they could see that I hadn't gone and bought a car just for the trade in deal. Check with the dealer

    Thanks all for the replies.

Probably. You'll have to ask the dealer but it's unlikely they'd willingly accept a car for scrappage that doesn't belong to the person that is taking the deal.

You can't just pay arrears, you'll need to pay for a solid 3 months plus any arrears owed. However if you tax it before the end of February, you'll still technically be renewing so no arrears will be owed and you'll be taxing for Feb, Mar, Apr.

Sweet. Thanks for that. Saved me a months tax so.

Not sure will look into it. She went to the Hyundai garage and told them what she was planning on doing with swapping the cars. They made no mention of it not being kosher.

    Cheers for that.

She looked at toyota auris hybrid. SLightly too expensive. Then the Hyundai i20 and Ford Fiesta zetec. She is going with the zetec I think.

What car company was that with if you dont mind me asking. I heard of a person whos car was supposed to be scrapped (as part of the deal)but they gave it back to the person who gave it to their gf. Seems strange but its a good friend of my dads so I dont doubt it.

Can I ask what was the process with this too? DId you have to change ownership for both cars? Swap insurance for both cars etc? Much cost involved in this?

I believe where you are just availing on a manufacturer scrappage promotion, the rules re long term ownership etc can be bent when a new car sale depends on it. The way I see it, these deals are just a way of discounting the cars without appearing to discount so certainly I'd take any car along and push for the deal.
Some say if you bargain hard enough, you would get the discounted price anyway but that may not be the case.
The terms of government scrappage schemes are generally strict to avoid false claims

It was with Hyundai. No didn't have to change ownership, just handed over the log book as is. Family member changed insurance to another car they took (changed ownership at this point after trade in) and I took out policy on new car. Didn't cost anything - I got trade in discount, and they got a refund on their insurance as policy on car they took over was cheaper :)

Nissan are the same, they would take a family members car without tax and give the Scrappage discount.

Ended up going with Honda.. no Scrappage deal.
Fully loaded HRV.. Only one of its spec in the country :D
    (Not me driving it)

Local Toyota dealer took a trade in of a micra with tax expired last summer and nct out since October for us last week.

    Just ask the salesman.

We had to transfer the car into our name first though.
