Hi there. Im car illiterate so looking for the forum wisdom! Car failed on emissions today so just wanted to check out what I should do before arranging retest.

    2006 Nissan X-Trail - 2.2l turbo diesel

Smoke was 3.400 /m and the test limit is 3.00 /m

The car hasn't been doing more city journeys and longer ones as I'm off my motorbike due to an accident.

Took her for a spin up the M50 this morning for a good 30 minutes and test was after work in stop/start traffic.

Is there an additive I can add and if so how soon before the test should I add it?

If I should take it for a long spin on a motorway should I do it in 6th gear or do it in a lower gear so that the revs are higher?

These are probably stupid questions but as I said I don't know much about cars. (Now bikes on the other hand...)

    Appreciate any help!

You need to be in a lower gear with high revs to clear it. There's additives you can get to add to the fuel, your local motor factors will sell them, around €5-€10 for them, add it straight away.

    Change the air filter.
Dump a whole bottle of Dipetane in the fuel tank and drive it hard for the next week. Only drive it hard when engine has reached operating temp (after 10 mins or so).

On the motorway, stay in 4th so revs will be 4/5000 RPMs

Drive it hard like this for a week and then either NCT again or find a mech that can check emissions for you.
