    Hi

I need to replace Flywheel and Clutch in my 00 Golf TDI (90bhp)...I want to hold onto this car for as long as I can...

If I go down the Solid/Single Flywheel road am I damaging my car?

If I go with Solid the choices of conversion kits are: ...National (€240)...BÖLK (~€300)...and Borg & Beck (€280)

(I've ruled out Transmech from what I've read on forums)

Or should I save up more and go with replacing like for like on a car this old?

I'd be very grateful to all willing to give me the benefit of their experience/knowledge....

I always believe in replacing like with like - if the car has a DMF originally then that's what I use again.
Replacing a DMF with a solid is not always a success - a bit of hit and miss.I know some who had no problems and others who were never happy with the conversion.
I replaced the DMF and clutch in a 2000 Bora (which would have the same engine etc as yours) and it now has over 130K mls done without any problems.
I presume you are paying to get the job done - what is the difference between the solid conversion and the DMF ?
If you plan on keeping it long term the DMF would probably be the best option - using a good brand.
Others may disagree but that's just my opinion .

It'll take a solid conversion no problem. It may feel a tad more agricultural but that's the trade off for the added reliability.

If the oem dual mass kit is cheaper then it could be worth considering as they last a reasonable length of time but normally they're dearer so not really worth it.

We have had a lot of issues with premature clutch wear with the solid kits over the years. So I'd say DMF all the way.

Thanks so much dooray and selectamatic for giving me your opinion....Dm is a lot more expensive...I'd settled on Solid/Single until reading through forums...some say it'll wreck other parts of the car...damage to gearbox was mentioned!

I've been driving with it slightly wonky for a number of years so I reckon the 'agricultural' (well put selectamatic) feel will be better than what it is at present!

But I'm finding it difficult to work out between the (low end?) brands...

Some sales ppl have advised me that the high end brands don't make a conversion kit so what ever I've seen on the internet much be bogus.....argh...so that gives a further problem...if I save a bit more and go for a high end brand...I need to be careful to match the right flywheel to the right clutch kit....I just don't have that level of expertise...

All those years in school....sigh....I wish they'd taught some of this stuff!!!

    DM Flywheel and Clutch €646...Sachs

You will get one much much cheaper than that if you know where to look. Check your PMs.

Alternatively....or on the other end of the spectrum a Transmech Solid/Single Flywheel and Conversion Kit for €220 ...?

Depends do you realistically only want another year or two out of the car or is it going to be likely to be your long term transport? A transmech solid conversation will be poorer quality and won't last as long or be as smooth as a dmf kit but it will work without damaging the gearbox or anything else

Darkside are a very reputable company, that's a decent price to be fair, if you are planning on keeping the car and it's in good condition otherwise then I'd go for that kit and you will be sorted for about 600 all in :)

Thanks rex-x...I'm using tradesmen.ie and the other one to try find a mechanic nearby...so here goes!

how bizarre?...no mechanic willing to quote for the job on either tradesmen.ie or onlinetradesmen.ie...

I wouldn't say either website are particulary well known in the motor trade. I've certainly never heard of either of them before.

Give George the business! Sounds like a thoroughly decent guy.

On the advice of our mechanic, i put a solid flywheel conversion in a sharan 1.9 a good few years ago. There was a big price difference at the time (£400 as opposed to £800 for Dual Mass flywheel).
Boy did i regret it. It was much more agricultural, much more vibration and just not enjoyable to drive.
Talked to the mechanic afterwards, and he said any feedback he got up to then was that there was little difference and other customers didnt think it was that bad for having saved £400.

Hi all...thanks everyone for your wisdom

Yeah Henry Ford III I reckon George is one of the good guys for sure...i was nearly gonna have to travel the distance up to him but I think I'm sorted now.

And a big thanks to you George...you really helped me make what I think is a wise decision

Thanks Pea be...Yeah I think you're right....I've done well on price then...I'm going with a guy in Gorey...I've decided not to supply the parts myself because if something went wrong it would be messy ....so the mechanic will supply and fit Dmf and clutch for €650...he sounds very honest even told me the 'book time' for the job....

If all goes well I'll post his name if that's allowed...just if it's helpful to anyone else in the Wexford area.
