Moving from a house to an Apartment with a dog

We're thinking of moving from a house to an apartment. We have a 2 year old cocker spaniel and am a bit worried about him barking. He is not at home during the day as he's with a minder. I'm wondering if anyone has any advice on training him not to bark on the balcony etc. Thanks.

    Is he a barker?
    Is he biddable?
    Is he excitable?
Really, if he is a barker in your current house, he will be the same in your apartment... the day you arrive if for some reason he barks on the balcony - presumably he will only be out on the balcony when you are there - then immediately say No! or ah ah! or whatever word you use/want to start using, if he stops barking, give him a treat, if he continues to bark, bring him indoors immediately. Keep doing that until he knows that he may not bark on the balcony...

By the way please be aware that a dog should never be allowed unsupervised on a balcony. If its wrought iron or anything he can squirm through, get stuck in, jump out over walls etc, I would never leave him out there for an instant on his own.

Thanks for your reply aonb, it's very helpful. He's not a huge barker but he does barks a bit when let out into the garden. He's still very puppy like and very excitable, but he's a fast learner so your suggestion about how to handle his first time on the balcony is good. I'm thinking I may need the help of a trainer, can anyone recommend a good one?

Keep in mind the majority of apartments don't allow pets (a house rule often enforced by the management company not just the LL).
