    Hey all...

I'm in the market for a new car after getting roasted with a 2009 2.0 Passat, (engine blew, oil pump failed on motorway)

I'm now thinking of a '08 Avensis or a '08 Mondeo, both in 2.0 diesel,

I've been told to avoid the 1.8Tdci Mondeo's and the new shape '09 Avensis for various reasons,

I really have to do my homework on this one so I'll take any input or opinions!

    many thanks,

why would you avoid the 09 avensis (newer shape)?

To be honest its the 08 avensis D4D you need to careful of.

Heres my input on the avensis:

I have a 2008 avensis 2.0 D4D from new now has 195k miles... in all this time i've had one major issue with it... the head gasket failed at 105k miles.... i bought new in northern ireland and when i took it into my local toyota dealer they told me i needed to source a second hand engine.... said it was nothing to do with the fact i bought it new in the north even if it was an irish car they sold it only be covered up to 3 years and 100k miles warranty.

Anyways long story short i rang the northern ireland toyota dealership where i bought it and they told me to bring it up to them.... took it in the back back out in 5 mins said heres a loan car come back in 3 days we will have a new 3/4 engine block fitted.

This head gasket issue would be my concern if buying the older model avensis.... make sure it was done as it was covered by toyota uk for up 7 years or 110k miles... not sure how much support toyota ireland gave on this issue.

Apart from that the egr valve can give trouble just make sure its cleaned regularly if not you may end up replacing it and your looking at 300 euro.

Apart for the above the car has given no trouble just regular stuff due to the mileage.... 2 front wheel bearings and brakes discs all round.

    .

I had a chat with a mechanic who rattled off various problems with various different cars, it was a lot to take in so I asked him in a nutshell what to go for and he recommended these 2 cars..., from what I remember he said the newer shape '09 Avensis had either engine or injector (rail) problems and that the '08 would be a safer bet?

It's the same 125bhp 2.0 litre d-4d engine in both old and new shape Avensis. Injector issue was more known with the older 116bhp 2.0 litre d-4d engine sold from 2000 to early 2006.
