    Hi,

My alternator belt was replaced less than 2 months ago by a auto repair place.

They provided the new part and fitted it at a pretty expensive price for what it was, I've the receipt.

However it broke last night and I was stuck on the side of the road.

What are my consumer rights here ? I can't afford to pay again for this.

They should get warranty on the belt, but you may have to pay for the labour?

Well I took a photo of the alternator before work was done on it. It looks like they forced the belt on and bent it.Meaning the belt was getting worn down every time I drove.

There is a free consumer helpline I'll call tomorrow before going into the garage.

Either there was an underlying problem when the belt broke originally or the belt was damaged during instalation. Gonna be hard to prove either way really be better off staying away from those chains find yourself a good independant mechanic.

For it to be replaced again for free, the belt itself would have to be faulty with is somewhat unlikely, then if it definitely was faulty you'd have to prove it was the belt alone at fault too, which would be difficult.

Tbh if you've lost 2x alternator belts in two months, you've probably got a faulty pulley somewhere.

I wouldn't hold my breath or honestly even waste my time trying to get this replaced again under warranty or any form of consumer rights. I'd also be just as concerned if the garage do fit another one for free as it sounds like the car may have a bigger issue.

Realistically the belt itself isn't going to be the cause of the problem.

Either the car has an underlying issue that is causing the belts to wear out prematurely (highly likely) or something was damaged during installation of the last belt (less likely)

In either case going in to the garage bleating about consumer rights isn't going to do you any favours.
