Comparable cars to a Passat from other brands

I'm wondering which cars of different brands compare to each other. For example, would a passat, mondeo & avensis all be similar in terms of the size, spec, class etc.? If so - which skoda model would be comparable to these? Octavia or superb?

I wonder if there's a magic chart or table available somewhere that compares them all?

Currently have an 8 yr old passat and was thinking about getting rid of it for something newer with lower mileage. I like the passat and the passat cc more so... in terms of my requirement the passat has suited me over the last few years so I'd like something similar in terms of size.

    Appreciate any recommendations also!

    Opel Insignia
    Ford Mondeo
    Skoda Superb
    Audi A4
    BMW 3 series
    Mercedes C Class
New Alfa Saloon forget the name
    Hyundai i40
    Kia Optima
    Toyota Avensis
    Mazda 6
    VW Passat

Would all be more or less competitors, most will be close or equal in price to Passat. Audi, BMW and Mercedes will be about 15-20% dearer, Hyundai and Kia a bit cheaper

That's enough of a list to get you started!

    Great thanks!

So is the octavia smaller than the passat? You know you're growing up when boot space and room for car seats are moving up the list of priorities!

Octavia is based on the Golf/Jetta size but has a big boot so can almost mix it with the likes of Passat etc.
Superb would be a bit bigger than your own car.

So are a golf & jetta the same except for the body shape?

    Pretty much.

If you're being specific, the Jetta is actually a generation behind the golf at the moment, but yeah. A golf with a boot basically.

Slightly smaller. Superb slightly bigger. The merc Audi and bmw above would be slightly smaller, if you go to e class, 5 series or a6 they would be slightly bigger.

Mondeo, Insignia, Avensis and Mazda 6 would be seen as true rivals to Passat in size and price.

My wife drives a mondeo and I had a string of passats up to that.

The mondeo is a good solid car, every bit as spacious as the Passat and the boot is a little bigger.
    We've a 140 2.0 dcci, nice powerful car and returns a steady 55mpg.

My only gripe would be the comfort of the seats, it's a zetec model so not the base line option but the seats just don't have the support and comfort on a long drive (2+hrs) than the Passat would have. We might investigate a Titanium model next time but I'd say herself will definitely want another mondeo.

I thought the new Octavia was bigger than the old version and is now more in line with size of Passat.

Previously drove a 2005 Octavia and was always happy with the boot. Moved up to a 2010 Mondeo hatchback and the boot is absolutely huge.

The seats are quite good in the current one (zetec anyway)

The Superb is from the same segment as the Passat, not the Octavia.

There's a list here but it's not comprehensive and includes vehicles/classifications outside of Europe:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Car_classification#Size_and_usage-based_vehicle_classification_systems_worldwide

You're looking at "D-segment" or "large family car" in European terms.

Some other cars not mentioned here so far:
    • Peugeot 508
    • Citroen C5
    • Subaru Legacy
    • Honda Accord
    • Toyota Prius
    • Hyundai Ioniq

The current Skoda Superb is actually an E-segment car so larger than most of these - it's more like the Audi A6 or BMW 5-series in terms of size.

Prius is Corolla sized and smaller inside than an Octavia.

Seats in the current Titanium are even better still than the ones in the current Zetec. Must admit, I wasn't overly impressed with the seats in the current Zetec.

Op, I have an Insignia at the moment which is about the same size as the Passat but I have been test driving Skodas for the past few weeks. The Superb is definitely bigger - at least it feels a lot bigger on the inside to us. The Octavia felt very similar if not slightly smaller than the Insignia on the inside. However, the boot space is far larger in either. Insignia is listed as 550l, Octavia as 610l and Superb as 660l, but the shape of the boot makes the Skodas far more accessible.

We had a 3-series before and again, the Superb is definitely larger. The two guys I work with have a 5-series and an E-class between them and I would say they are of similar size to the Superb.

All the above being said, we are looking for the same reasons as yourself (boot space and car seats :D) - and the Superb fits better, for us at least. We have just ordered a 171 Style 2.0 150BHP.

I had a Superb Combi and it's massive in the back, there is nothing else on the market offering the same leg room which, if you need it, is great. My new A6 Avant has much less legroom in the rear but then I'm in the drivers seat most of the time :-)

Its the Combi that we are ordering. Massive car but still feels quite refined. Very much looking forward to getting it!

    I had a Golf mk4 for 6yrs . I then switched to a Ford ,C-max 2011 2yrs ago ( 1.6d . Titanium . newer shape with all the bells and whistles ) .

I noticed rust starting to appear on a wheel arch of my C-max and it went in under warranty for repair ( it came back like new ) . While it was in , I was supplied with a 2015 Passat ,1.8d . I was very happy to get my C-max back after the repair as the Passat was like a tractor compared to how smooth the Ford drives . When I brought the Passat back to the hire company , the lad working there asked me how I got on with it . I told him that I preferred the comfort and drive of the Ford over the Passat and he preceded to tell me how much over hyped he thinks that VW are in Ireland as he drives most of the car brands regularly and rates VW near the bottom for driving .

I expected much more from the Passat with the reputation the car has in Ireland . I would prefer a Skoda over the VW as your not paying as much for the brand name and it is a VW underneath .

Try out a Ford Mondeo is my tip .

You'll love it, very easy car to live with and oodles of space. Very handy little hooks and stowing bits in the boot and very well thought out vehicle throughout. Mine was the 170 with DSG gearbox so it could get going as well :-)

And on top of it you get a brolly in the passenger door!

The Corolla is in a weird place in that it's grown significantly over the years and now has the same wheelbase as the Avensis and Prius - it makes more sense in markets where the Avensis is not sold and the next step up is the Camry, which is larger again. It's still considered a C-segment car (small family car) though, along with the Octavia (which was always larger than average in the segment) - I guess a lot of this is also down to the levels/quality of equipment and pricing. Hard to deny the Corolla and Octavia are cheaper cars than a Passat/Mondeo/Avensis etc.

The Prius is at the smaller end of the D-segment (externally) but by no means cramped inside, though I haven't been in a current Corolla or Octavia to compare. Boot space obviously not as good as an Octavia.

The 159/Giulia would be also a contender.

Sit into a current Mondeo or Passat after a Corolla/Prius and you'll see whet I mean. Corolla isn't a small car, but the class up is getting bigger at the same time

I have my superb combi 2 and half years and only found the brolly 2 weeks ago. Odd that it is in passenger door. Mighty car and I will be replacing it with the new one when lease mileage is up later this year.

I've an 08 Octavia Estate. Put the seats down and you have 6 feet of storage space.

I've 2 young kids and have ample room for a holiday.

I would love one of these over any other car on the market if money was no object.

The specific combi we had ordered has "disappeared from the system " so currently back to looking at stock lists too see what else is in the country at the moment. Hopefully they will fins another suitable one.

Going to view an Optima Sportswagon in the meantime, just in case!

If you like the feel of the Passat, I'd look at either the Skoda Octavia or the Superb.
You get far more bang for your buck with the Skoda of all the VW-family.

I'm not certain that's true anymore. The Superb isn't the bargain it once was - relative to the new Passat anyway.

Given the build quality that I've seen, I'd still view the Superb as better value than a Passat or an A6....

VW & Audi quality is definitely equal to the Superb. Nothing between them.

Not these days. Superb and Passat are nearly matched these days both on spec and prices. In fact a 2.0 TDi Passat Highline Business Edition is slightly higher spec than a 2.0 TDi Superb Style, both costing circa 37k.

Looked at an i40 saloon this week. It was nice enough. Had some gadgets I'm not used to like bluetooth, automatic hold, a USB connection and a parking camera which appeared in the mirror when put into reverse. First time using that and it took a little getting used to. Sales guy told me that the sat-nav is not available in 2013 models and that it was only introduced in later years. is this correct?

In terms of driving it felt quite good on the motorway as well as through the town. Mileage on the clock was 60,000km and the dealer is looking for around €17K.
