Transmission fluid change

I know opinions are mixed on using them but is it possible / advisable to use a fluid extractor for a transmission fluid change?

Car is a Honda accord ctdi and the transmission fluid location is relatively easy to get to from the top of the engine i.e. using the extractor would avoid getting under the car! If possible that is... What do ye think?

I think it would be a bad idea as any old metal fillings would still be at the bottom of the gearbox and then remixed with the new oil.

I use a sealey vacuum pump,to get most out, then release the small amount left normal way, plus always use it for engine oil change

Just use the bung, the drain on the accord is easy access anyway.
Use MTF3 not any old gearbox oil for that gearbox, its actually cheaper than generic gear oil in my experience!

Any recommendations on where to source it cheapest? Is online the way to go?

I bought some here but it was part of a larger order so shipping didn't make a difference, think it's around £12 shipping...

If there's a main dealer near you might work out cheaper to get it from them if you have the time to get to them.

My Honda dealer was cheaper than any online source I could find.
I don't think it cost more than 10 a litre.

I wouldn't bother with the pump. The cdti is easy to get at plus as has been said you might suck nasties up into the gears.
I found changing the oil made a great difference to mine!
