I'm worried I might drink too much. On average I'd say I drink 10 pints a week and one or two Shorts.
I was drinking about 10 pints and 10 shorts up to January but have cut back
How much do you drink ?

Honestly? Does it affect you in work ?

I would say I drink 4 pints on average a month. Unless there's an event on wedding/holiday etc. I don't think I'd miss it if I had none.

OP, do you socialise much or where do you drink?
I drink in pubs and often on my own. It became too complicated to arrange to meet people and I like to read in pubs. If I drank with others would be worse

@JakeSisko1980 - what exactly is the nature of the question you are asking, and why is it a Personal Issue for you?

Posters - please note that this is not a chat thread about how much you drink. That belongs in a different forum

Interesting question and I think its no harm having a bit of self awareness of how much alcohol you are consuming.

I would say it very much depends on what stage you are in your life. I was never a major boozer but I would have comfortably consumed that back in the day when I was either single or pre-kids. If you went out a couple of nights over the weekend, it wouldn't be that hard to do for a lot of people. Now that kids are on the scene, I've defo cut back. Don't get out too much so drinking usually involves a couple of glasses of wine and a couple of beers with the missus after the kids have gone to bed to unwind after the week. But if I was still consuming what I was before kids came along, i'd definitely be worried about myself as it would be impacting on my ability to contribute to the family unit!

10 pints and 10 shorts does sound like a lot but now that you've cut down on the shorts, you're probably in a more reasonable consumption zone. Also depends on how its spread out? Is it over a couple of nights or just the one night? I used to round off the night with a couple of shorts but gave up on it as it just meant i'd drink more. Sticking to the beers was a way of making sure I couldn't really drink more that I was able to physically put into me!!

Without knowing anything about your personal circumstances, if I was you, I would be concerned if it was holding you back in other areas in your life. For example, do you spend most of the weekend hungover and unmotivated to do anything? Are you turning in for work late or hungover? Is it affecting your relationships? Is it affecting you financially? Is it adversely affecting your personality? If its not really doing any of these things then you're probably ok for now....if it is, then maybe time to reflect....

Thank you for the above Marcusp12. It does impact on family life a wee bit. TBH its my escape to get away for 2 hours but otherwise I am around to do whats needed.
Where I would worry about it is I drink drive. I drive from the pub to the house with 2/3 pints on me. Its less than half a mile but its only a matter of time before I get caught and thus whatever about amount its time to cut that out.
I know the self righteous will now jump on me but I wont be back on this thread again so its to yourselves you will be talking.

At less than half a mile you could walk. It'd take less than 10 minutes. I'm not going to jump on you for drink driving, but if you think that you are drinking too much and drink is starting to affect your life and the lives of those around you, then it is only right that you take a look at it.

There's a non-drinkers forum here where people who are giving up/cutting down give each other advice and support. It might be worth posting there.

OP, a lot of sense here...the easiest thing for you to change is actually the most important. Just walk.....as you say, sooner or later you'll get caught and that will have a far worse affect on your family than the one or two more that you possible have that's impact on it currently.....good luck with it OP

It does impact on family life a wee bit.

Have you asked your partner how much it impacts them? Because there's a possibility that if you think it impacts life a wee bit, they might feel it impacts an awful lot more.

I know in my case it took my husband about 8 or 9 years to realise how much his drinking and his "escape to get away for 2 hours" was actually impacting on our family life. To him he was just having a few drinks, enjoying the craic in the pub after a long day/week whatever. But it was much more than that. Obviously I don't know the specifics of your situation, but in all cases of problem drinking I know of, the people around the person had a problem with it long before the person themselves had a problem with it!

Thanks for above. I have quit Vodka which was my main culprit at home but I have to quit the drink driving. Id like to get into a pattern of only one night a week. Will look up that forumn. Could somebody provide a link?

Type "non drinkers" into the search box at the top of the site. I'm on the touch site at the moment so mightn't work.
