Interesting idea but had a quick look there and sounds like it's primarily for short journeys around Dublin. I'm planning on using it going home at weekend and the like

Why. Do you have to be over 25? Didn't see that anywhere

Did the math, it works out at 120 a week for an Insignia or similar (minus fuel) for a 30+ driver.

That cuts close to what I pay for the car loan and diesel.

If there were locations all over the country it'd be an interesting concept.

when you go to rent online it asks you your age
    25+ is the lowest

Usually yeah. Also the prices quoted in that article aren't based on reality. I read it too and went getting quotes, nowhere near what they say, and that is now at this time of year. Prices go up with demand too in the summer.

But if you need an occasional car it could work out, but not full time, if they will even hire one to you.

    Avis as an example

The renter must be over 25 years old to rent standard cars in ireland.

The renter must have been eligible to hold a valid driving licence for 8 years of which 2 years must be at a full driving licence qualification.

Most people seem to overlook a motorbike. It is really cheap insurance and tax wise, no nct and the bikes themselves are mostly cheap. And very effective for commuting in city or town.

    Ye they are miles cheaper
Did a quote the other day for my brother that's 17 on a learner licence on a 125 bike. Only ~€950 for the year on Insurance.
Were a 1ltr car was in the thousands :p

Not exactly same thing now are they. Can't transport or store anything except yourself, exposed to elements, have to carry your gear around with you. Absolutely lethal too most people wouldn't get on a bike. Stats are there to prove it too. That said, I'm considering getting one for recreation but not out playing in the heavy traffic

In terms of cost bikes and cars are very different. Exposed to elements doesn't really count as even cheap gear protects you almost the same as a car and I speak from experience I have both a car and a bike and I was riding through all winter with no problems at all, you can do 120 km/h and be fully comfortable on a bike. Carrying your gear, I wouldn't consider it a problem either, you can get a back box or a backpack which should be more than enough for you to carry all your things. And if you need to transport something big, ask a friend or rent it for 1 day, as I am sure it would be much much cheaper than maintaining a car or renting a car every day. Tax for a bike is 50 or 88 euro after 250cc per year. Insurance from 300 to 1000(0 experience, learners permit 18 year old)
Also time is money, i cut my commute time from 2 hours to 45min every day. With a car I could not predict the time I will arrive due to traffic conditions, construction, accidents but with a bike you can always filter through traffic whatever the case.
