    Hi all,

Just wondering does anyone know what it is like to work for a County Council?

I currently work in a Public Service agency (under DSP) where the work would be quite challenging and the environment would be professional. There is also plenty of opportunity to do work above your grade.

I've heard that the work in County Council's may not be that challenging and that you are very much stuck to the typical work for your grade.

Would love to hear people's experiences.

    Thanks.

    P.S: Is there flexi-time?

All depends on grade and nature of your work...are you professional / technical or clerical admin? Lower grades clerical generally wouldn't be that challenged.. however some work in extremely challenging areas such as dealing with homeless services.
Yes there is generally flexible working...again depends on your grade and work area...

I'm an EO at the mo (14 months) but saw an ad for a Staff Officer position which starts at 40 grand in a location I'd like to eventually move to. I'd get a lot of varied and pretty challenging work where I am now, sometimes work at HEO/AP level and would hate to be confined to grade specific work. So I don't want to throw my hat in if the work would end up monotonous and unchallenging.

Hi, having worked in both civil service and local authority in most cases staff officer responsibility in LA would be a lot more than an EO and closer to a HEO level

Staff Officer is middle management...usually leads a team..manages performances output training etc...usually is responsible person for that function. Other staff officers work on projects etc
As always depends where you end up...
When moving from Civil service to Public service or county council do you keep the same spot on the payscale or equivalent? And vice versa?

Staff Officer and executive officer are pretty much equivalent salary wise (max of scale)
Once upon a time you were automatically put on your point on scale +1 on making such a move...then it became on a case by case basis...as far as I understand they are are trying to make it first point on scale regardless now...not 100% if that has come in so you'd need to have that discussion if you get job.
