Thunderbird, iPhones and Email Notificiations

I use Thunderbird on a PC in work for work emails (Blacknight mail server). One of the accounts I manage is also set up on my Boss's iPhone so that he can monitor and reply to those emails too. Our problem is that if an email is sent to us and I open it on the PC in Thunderbird, he wont get a notification for it (he only gets the notification if I don't open the email).

Is there a setting somewhere to make it that his iPhone gives him an email notification when it checks the server, even if the email has already been opened? I.e. as long as the email is new to the iPhone, a notification pops up?
