Toyota Avensis diesel D4D running badly

HI people , thought i would share this with you.

I have toyota avensis diesel 06.I had timing belt done and the engine was serviced after buying the car.
The car ran fine for few weeks then all of sudden lots of black smoke very poor running,. would start from cold no problem, but after 20 mins would not pull you out of bed.
Got advice from at least 5 garages not one of them mentioned egr valve. I was told it could be everything else from injectors, diesel pump, cat, fuel filters, engine timing, bad diesel, ecu..

I left it with toyota they had it over two days could not find problem. I went online looking for help the toyota forum lit up with people who had spent a fortune on pumps, injectors, trottle body, air flow meter - only to find it was blocked egr valve.

Went up took the car back from toyota, brought it home took out the egr valve it was black with ****.

Got some carb/egr cleaner, a small brush and cleaned it out. now you have to take off the top cover of the valve three number 8ts. make sure to mark it.
While pressing the spring loaded valve spray the cleaner in everywhere.

I cleaned it every well. put it back car runs like a dream. the egr valve is too the right as you look in on side of head. you will need to remove battery and airbox.

The whole job takes just over half hour, tools needed carb cleaner, small brush few sockets.
Go to youtube type in toyota avensis diesel egr valve liam is the guy you are looking for.

In the beginning I unplugged the air flowmeter and for while it ran fine unplugged, bought new one thinking that must be it but no. it ran as bad. I had it on two independent computers no faults found. so if your car suddenly runs very rough please go first clean out egr valve.

Can't believe Toyota couldn't diagnose it. It's a common enough thing on them.

i do believe they in the long run would have but how long. they did not charge us money for the two days. there computer showed up no faults thats what gets me. but then how would a gummed up valve show up on computer, i don't know. it was the power of the internet people telling everyone how much they had spent on new pumps, only to find it was egr valve. Toyota said if it was egr valve its over 700 euro.

Big mistake bringing an 06 to main dealer.

How much it cost for them to sit and laugh at it for?

think it was said already but this is a very common issue with the D4D engine ..... i too had a similar issue but toyota replaced the egr valve under warranty when it first happened....

I always service my car myself once the first 3 years were up from new.... cleaning the egr valve has always been part of my 10k miles service... i suggest you do the same.... actually i only did it last week. I had noticed the car was getting it much harder to start on the cold mornings....it would start but die just as soon... once i cleaned the egr valve its perfect again starts and remains running even at -2 these mornings.

Fuel economy wouldn't be their strong point, mid to low 30's in town driving, rising to a bare 40 mpg on a long spin.

They're more economical than that if they're running right.

Driving over 120km/h cuts fuel economy big time so lower down the revs the better.

Not really, they're fill to fill figures over a number of years and decent maintenance being done on time. The newer engine coupled to the 6 speed box are a good bit better particularly on long spins.

Thats what i would have thought. Those figures id expect from a petrol more than a diesel

There's very very little difference between the petrol and diesel in them for that era. As I said already the facelift engine with the 6 speed box were a good bit better. Competition from the likes of the 1.5 DCI Renault etc made them up their game in the fuel consumption stakes.

I have to say I get more like 50 mpg on a long run in my one. Low 30s around Dublin alright but then I would bet with the same style of driving in a petrol I would get a lot less.

Dipethane is the job for keeping the egr clean. A bottle does about 4 tanks.

Same here. Used to get late 40s on them commuting but they were newish at the time. I drive a 6 speed one now with work and it's a bit more economical again.
