C licence?

Anybody confirm that a C licence is all that is needed to drive an 18 ton gvw truck.

We got a new truck today, upgrading one of our 12 ton trucks, got onto insurance company who wanted copies of the licences for the drivers (all drivers have B, C1 and C on the licences) and they said "No, that isn't the correct category."

So we send an email to the NDLS looking for them to clarify and they come back to us saying you need a C1E
A C1E is 7.5 ton truck plus trailer and total not exceeding 12 ton, so I'm not sure thats correct at all?

Have emailed the NDLS again to confirm but not sure they know themselves :D

If it a rigid or tractor unit and trailer? Could be easier if you told the model.

    Category C1
Trucks in category C having a MAM* weight not exceeding 7,500 kg, having passenger accommodation for not more than 8 persons in addition to the driver and where the MAM* of the trailer is not greater than 750 kg.

    Category C
Trucks having a MAM* exceeding 3,500 kg, having passenger accommodation for not more than 8 persons in addition to the driver and where the MAM* of the trailer is not greater than 750 kg.

    Category C1E
Combination of drawing vehicles in category C1 and trailer where the MAM* of the trailer is greater than 750 kg and where the MAM* of the drawing vehicle and trailer combined does not exceed 12,000 kg. Combination of drawing vehicles in category B with trailer where the MAM* of the trailer is greater than 3,500 kg and where the MAM*of the drawing vehicle and trailer combined does not exceed 12,000 kg.

    That's definitely C.

Good to see that the NDLS is as good as the County Councils were. When I got my CE the person behind the counter said I couldn't have BE as I hadn't a pass cert, told them that I could tow a trailer for an artic and they had to ask the person in the next booth what the E was!

This just confirms how useless they all are in RSA, NDLS, insurers, etc...
They seem to have no clue.

C licence is all you need.

Last weekend, I was doing driver CPC training module, and CPC instructor was trying to say that there are different categories for artic lorry or lorry with trailer. Nonsense.

They are different permits. But the CE full will give you a BE full, if you then do D you'll get DE. That's how I got them.

Surely if you have a full C and got a learner CE, you are also qualified to have a learner BE?

    Severe lack of knowledge there!
From my knowledge, many cpc 'trainers' are civilians who do it part-time.

I did my lessons and test in a rigid+trailer and so got my CE licence.
(I actually found this set up easier to get used to in comparison to the couple of artics I took lessons in previously).

I would be of the belief that - once you have all the relevant theory tests completed - you could have all learner permit categories on one permit?

I had C+E and B+E on one learner permit (as I wished to keep my options open about which category I would go for - glad I went with CE in the end though ..even if it did cost me a lot more).
