Here's the trailer. Probably the most idiotic thing I've ever seen for the premise for a TV show. Judging by the like ratio others agree.

and if there was a show called "dear black people", same people would be out marching that Their lives matter whilst peacefully smashing and looting businesses! whilst the champagne black lives matter brigade are protesting the Oscars!!

they need to speak with Morgan freeman on that note.... he has a cool view on the whole race thing.

I'm guessing because its NETFLIX then it's cool nowadays! kinda like when they put a laurel beside a crap film that says "best movie ever" at some obscure festival and people say, wowww it has laurels, it must be edgey and indie!!!

In fairness, the trailer doesn't give much away. Black people being offended by blackface is hardly anything new or offensive. I find it ironic that people who whinge about others being overly sensitive are getting their knickers in a knot about 35 seconds of very little to go on.

I would have to see a lot more before being able to make any judgement.

EDIT: It's based on this film: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dear_White_People

How about reading through that and making a more informed decision than getting your blood pressure up over 30 seconds of video?

Have you seen the show OP? Have you seen the film it's based on? Or are you just having a knee jerk reaction over nothing?

It's a show based on a film about racial tensions in a university and is told from the perspective of black students. It's a story exploring racism in America, which is a pretty big deal in that particular country by the way. I don't see the problem in that.

Likewise, you're not an American so there's no point in you getting up in arms about a story about racism in a different country.

How much time do you think Dear Black People would get? :pac:

Yes it's clearly satire, imo "Dear Black people" wouldn't fly over one would think - either way I think the race baiting nonsense needs to stop. It's not the smartest move in the book by Netflix after the MTV video with the same title went viral for all the wrong reasons, perhaps that's the angle but I don't think it's a wise one.

"Dear Black People" could get made if it was done properly. People need to stop and think and analyse what is going on instead of instantly reacting to everything.

I read about it here from a reddit post.

Kinda this TBH. I had occasion to chat with a black lad who had grown up in Chicago and then moved to the UK through his career and he said the difference between the two cultures was a large one. Sure he did get some race stuff in the UK, but in the US it was somehow deeper, more divisive and lines on both sides were more sharply drawn. America and "race" is a huge subject and an oft oddball one too. Even within a group like "white people". Where a native Spaniard is somehow "less white" than a German, but Italians are seen as "white".

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Given that it was made in 2015/2016 the chances are it will have a heavy sjw input and essentially will be a reverse Huckleberry Finn, if its genuine parody of identity politics nonsense then cool but its unlikely

It probably wouldn't have been noticed except for that moronic "New Year’s resolutions for white men" on MTV. People are sensitive regardless of gender or colour you know.

I can post what I want - Stuff like this does nothing besides create further divisiveness which is evident by the backlash it's receiving.

The MTV story was posted on AH and nobody seemed to have a problem.

"Dear" as in expensive, as in you're talking about the price of certain Black people... that they could be bought and sold... HalloweenJack is advocating slavery everybody! Let's get him!

The difference between the MTV clip and this is that we saw all of the MTV ad and were able to judge it properly.

This is a clip, a highlight which clearly shows a level of satire to the comments which the MTV ad did not.

In otherwords Hank, your Snowflake is showing.

No idea what it will be about, but it could just show the ridiculous nature of the sjw movement. Probably not, but you never know.

    What's it satirizing?

The music is a massive hint, the intro and the overall style point at a comedic satire.

I'm not saying it's not going to be as stupid as the MTV clip, but what I am saying is that you cannot judge it until it has been fully released and watched it.

Did it not maybe cross your mind that Netflix released it in such a way as this to drive up controversy and get people talking about it? Its like, Marketing 101.

On the Youtube trailer commenters are saying their comments are being deleted, sounds awfully like what Sony did with Ghostbusters so makes it sound like they may have fkd up

Oh no, people on YouTube are mad and overreacting to a trailer.

I disliked the MTV trailer as much as anyone else, because it was just plain racist and annoyingly American focused, but this is just a trailer.

Anyone with any resemblance of logic would be smart enough to wait until the show is out before judging it.

Are black people offended by blackface? (stupid term by the way)
What if I was to dress up as Stevie Wonder but I didn't blacken up to avoid offence then it would be a fairly crap effort at dressing up.

    ...'what did you come as?'
    Me...'Stevie Wonder'
    ...'but you're not black'
    Me..'yeah....'
...'kinda stupid dressing up as a black person if you don't paint yourself black'
    Me...'yeah...'

Am I personally offended, no - I couldn't care less.
Would I watch it? No - it looks shíte.

But that being said it is definitely a double standard.

Dear black people would of course be racist.
The MOWO awards would of course be racist.

I haven't seen it, but i'm gonna take a while guess that it's probably going to contain a lot of black people calling each other the N word (which we still can't type because feelings, and i'm white) while telling off white people for calling them the N word... Or maybe not, but that seems to be the trend.

Either way, i won't be watching it, it's not targeted towards me so meh.

I can definitely see an argument that minority groups have been the butt of jokes for a long, long, time in the USA and so why shouldn't white people have a taste of their own medicine?

I kind of agree with that and I think, yeah, maybe people shouldn't take this stuff seriously. Then you have to remember though that over the years making jokes about people based on race or gender has been becoming less acceptable and it seemed for a long time that this was what the people wanted. No racist jokes, no sexist jokes. They are deemed offensive.

Now it seems like racism and sexism is back on the table so long as it's aimed at white people. We don't really call it "racism" though because "prejudice plus power".

There is definitely an argument that "punching up" is seen as more acceptable than "punching down". Should we be surprised though when people start punching back?

I guess it's really aimed at college kids and hopefully it's just a good fun show that doesn't get anyone too riled up.

Or it could be a massive own goal that puts race relations in the USA back a few decades. (Obviously not this show alone but the cumulative effect of such content)

People will argue that anti-Muslim sentiment is playing into the hands of groups like ISIS so surely the same argument holds here? Shows like this are an opportunity for white supremacy groups to gain popularity and recruit impressionable young people.

If it becomes fashionable to single out "white people" in a nation that is 63% white then would it really be that much of a surprise to see the growth of white nationalist movements?

Different election than the norm, had no real interest before. Celebrity anti PC loudmouth vs seasoned corrupt stooge. I found the entire thing fascinating, also there were other things in play which do effect Europe to an extent, like attitudes towards the migration crisis, but that's for another thread.
