    Hi all,

Looking for some advice as to whether I was overcharged by local garage...went in for a service and pre NCT check....this was the bill

    Full Service....140
    2 Front Wishbone Bushes...150
    2 Front Wipers .....30
Off side rear brake calliper 175
    4 brake flexi hoses....150
    Exhaust Flexi hose.....100
    Front discs and pads....175
    Rear discs and pads....150

Total of €1,070. Guy is usually okay but the past six months or so he has lost the run of himself pricewise....missus car was in for a service and came back with a bill for 600 odd just before xmas..neither car was giving trouble but they are getting on my is a 06 mark v golf and hers is a 07 Opel Zafira

Is the price for the repairs above reasonable or has he screwed me over...he knew I was heading in for the NCT the following day so was caught between a rock and a hard place,

    Any advice welcome

Next time do the NCT first, they will tell you what needs fixing.

    The mind boggles.
You just gave him free reign to replace parts at will?

If you are the type who just keeps the car to ncts standard, just drop it in for test then replace as required.

From the garages point of view, if they left some items and you failed the test, you would call him a cowboy. He therefore replaces anything that is borderline to ensure you pass but this costs you.

Looking at the list, if the flexible hoses needed doing, that is at least a life saving repair.

I didn't really give him free reign, he rang at 4pm to say it needed all this after leaving it in at 9am...as I said I was caught as test was following day. That said I should have put it in a used the test as a means of knowing what really needed doing.
At this stage it more of coulda shoulda woulda !! Hindsight is a great job...what do ye reckon on prices....that's more of my concern as it's a decider as to whether he ever gets business from me again

    P.s. agree about flexi-hoses 👍

Looks to be about right if that includes all labour too.

To be honest that looks quite reasonable! how long ago had you last replaced the discs on the car? you would normally expect about 3 years out of a set give or take (I get 1.5 to 2 but I use aggressive pads)

In fairness it probably has been that length since the discs were last done (3 years)...good to know that the sting is taken out of the price and I was just judging him only through 'euro parting' tinted glasses.
Without a knowledge of the mechanics industry, we can be quick to make snap judgement.

    Appreciate the input

It sounds reasonable to be honest. As said previously do the test in future and see what it fails on. If your mechanic points out stuff to be done that does not fail in the nct you can get them replaced during the year at intervals to soften the blow. Brakes are always a good investment in any car.

Prices are ok I think, the question is if all of it really had to be done.

Ballistic repair in the brakes, was the car stopping at all before the service?
