This is a good price for a phone with the S820.
But the rest of it seems great too. Even with customs fees if it gets stopped, this is a good price. It looks like Lenovo are not holding back.
You must use one of these codes to get the price:
    reyeszuk
    or
    Franky Vincent
    or

Had the Z1 version for the last year and can really recommend it.

Left it on a plane on Monday so this has come at a good time for me.

The only thing was the delivery time. It took an age to arrive.

I ordered this on 20 January and it arrived today to give an idea of delivery times.

Seems to be a fairly decent ROM support so will look at installing Lineage OS I think

I chose the cheap one - I live in France and with the cheapest shipping option I almost never get caught for customs charges

No band 20 could mean limited 4G coverage, other than that, seems like a decent phone for that money

I had the Zuk z1 original phone and this version is even sleeker. Definite bargain

From what I've read, band 20 is more suited to longer range (rural) situations.
I'm on iD mobile in Ennis and have 4G coverage but my handset has band 20 so I'm not sure how limited it is without.
Wonder is there any way to see what band ur phone is using?

You'll only have 4G in the cities and bigger towns but your milage will vary. I'm not aware of any public map showing the signal footprint per band per network.

If you have an iPhone it's displayed as "Freq band indicator" when you go into the Serving Cell Info in the field test. Ya can google for the field test if you're so inclined :cool:

None of the discount codes work.
Debating getting this- versus a Lenovo G4 Plus (which works out at about 30 Euro more). I know the Z2 has a better processor- however, I'm not convinced that the extra horsepower alone is a good enough reason to get this over the G4 Plus- any comments guys?

The codes for the G4Plus- on the Lenovo/Motorola site- still work- so its akin to a 44% discount.

    Decisions, decisions, decisions........

By the way- also couldn't get the band code to work (on a HTC One M8 on Vodafone). Slightly worried the Z2 would be handicapped by its more limited band selections.

I just tried the Zuk2, I cannot even click "add to cart" so maybe it is just a temporary issue, because it says the promotion is ongoing until the 20th of February.

They are running with these others also
    LeTV Le Max 2 X289 - http://www.banggood.com/LeTV-LeEco-Le-Max-2-X829-5_7-inch-4GB-64GB-Snapdragon-820-Quad-core-4G-Smartphone-p-1125233.html
The price drops to €178 using either code X829 or reyesx829
    - And to enable the 3G band - 800MHz (before anyone mentions it :P )
      Type * # * # 9439 # * # *
A menu appears (in Chinese) with a check box. Simply check this box and then restart the phone.

    Umi Plus B20 - http://www.banggood.com/UMI-Plus-5_5-Inch-2_5D-4GB-RAM-32GB-ROM-MTK-Helio-P10-Octa-Core-4G-Smartphone-p-1085030.html
Which drops to €142 using code umiplus16

I am a bit tempted by this to say the least, my s6 battery is starting to die a bit and I am fed up of my expensive contract l, why fork over 700 euro for a new phone in a few months when these are practically as good and I can go prepay with more data included. How does this compare to the other chinese phones, is it worth a shot? Im a bit worried about LTE though.

Theres a discount code for zuk z2 on Gear best forum, its 173 euro there, not quite as cheap as this price but the coupons seem to be gone now. Edit - doh that's not as cheap as banggood.

Folks any decent compact size (around 4.6 inch screen) phones on Amazon or any Irish retailers for about €150/€200? Something with a decent battery life and maybe water/dust proof? Storage capacity, screen resolution, camera quality etc not so important. It's just for basic use.

    Lol- MP4 Player......
How is are customs suggesting you owe?

    Ok- letter received here too.
So you have to declare what you paid.
Are we all saying we paid US$164 - we'd better all agree (and have proof)- or else C&E will impound the phones.......
Now- where the hell is the Paypal I used.......

Did we all pay US$164? How much did we actually pay? I can't find my Paypal payment (don't know which one related to the Zuk)........

    Anyone?

Using the voucher codes- I paid US$149.55 and got free shipping (this was in early Jan).

I'm declaring the full amount and sending a screenshot of my Paypal to Revenue- I hope no-one is annoyed, but I don't intend to make a misdeclaration.

Do we get charged on what we actually paid or what its currently selling for (its at US$169.99 this morning- not a massive difference, but its a few quid one way or the other).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,636 ✭✭✭the.red.baron

Mine arrived Monday, nice phone, no bloatware like some other chineeze phones, screen is very nice, very snappy response, like the finger print reader that no doubt sends it back to the NSA

Camera is still rubbish next to a premo phone, absolute dog **** in lowish light

    Has an app drawer

Slipped past customs, did your have any banggood labels on it? I bought 2

Get a cover, the glass back is a stupid design move, a 1 in 30 slope would see it slip off

Got a pleasant enough e-mail from one of the Revenue officers in Mail Sorting.
Customs duty is exempt on 'gifts' valued at under 150 Euro- VAT is however due.
VAT- and the 7 Euro An Post processing charge- comes to a bill of EUR39.58
I sent them a screenshot of my Paypal account as proof of what I actually paid for the Zuk2 plus shipping. Reasonable enough- and I'm satisfied. Cheque ready for the postman- and I've been advised it should arrive on Friday.

Curiously- Revenue repeatedly called it a G4 phone. That- it most certainly, isn't.........

Far better processor, better but smaller screen, same software (extremely lightly skimmed android)- better camera (though still not great).

Its a smaller phone- but better spec'ed.

Massive downside- no memory expansion slot (though it is dual sim)- the G4+ can take memory cards up to 220Gb.

If you're not overly worried about memory- and 64Gb is sufficient- and you're happy with a smaller screen- then this is the obvious choice (in my opinion).

Depending on what you pay for it- you may have to pay customs and vat on it (or you may get lucky- I didn't.........)

What did it cost you in euro in the end? How long after ordering did you get the phone also?...

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 32,286 Mod ✭✭✭✭The_Conductor

What did it cost you in euro in the end? How long after ordering did you get the phone also?...

Including paying VAT and an An Post 7 Euro handling charge, the total came to 181 Euro. It hasn't actually been delivered yet, it should be here tomorrow or Friday, which will be exactly 5 weeks since I ordered it. I came in just under the cut-off for customs duty, so I paid VAT, but no duty on it.

    Note:

I supplied a screenshot to Revenue of my Paypal account- clearly showing what I paid- and they used current rates to convert the total into Eur. If you go over 150 Euro- you have to pay duty as well as VAT- my total, after voucher usage, was US$149.55 (I actually ordered before this thread- and got two separate vouchers to work- which included free shipping). Shipping is factored into Revenue calculations- i.e. if you pay extra for expedited shipping- it'll bump up the gross you pay- and almost certainly take you over the threshold........ Ps- the exchange rate they used for the dollar conversion- was pretty appalling- which is why my VAT ended up a little higher than it might otherwise have done.

I also gave Revenue a link to the actual product for sale on Banggood- it was at 174.99 yesterday morning- but seems to have gone down a fiver since.

If you're marginal pricewise when ordering (after using vouchers)- taking the regular shipping (which has still tracking and insurance) may keep you under the duty threshold, however, as per my experience- it'll probably take in or around 4 weeks- and from PMs received- it would appear Revenue are a lot more vigilant than they used be, though a few people seem to have gotten products without showing up on their radar..........

Revenue asked for specific proof of the actual amount I paid- and suggested the Paypal screenshot themselves (though they would also have accepted a scan or fax of a credit card statement). E-mailing the screenshot was the easiest for me- and they acknowledged it within the hour.

Is there a need to declare the item as a gift to exempt it from customs duty on top of the VAT or would all non commercial quantities delivered to a private person be assumed as gift?

Declaring it as a gift improperly risks the item being impounded.
I was told the declaration is immaterial- if the value in Euro goes over 150 Euro- it doesn't qualify for a gift exemption. Mine actually came in at under 150- because of the two vouchers I used which were valid at the time. I don't know whether they still are, or not, valid.

Some packages are getting through without being examined- however, I wouldn't rely on it.

My tracking shows the phone handed to customs in Dublin. Dang.
I paid 172eur on banggood. Any idea how much I owe? Should I contact them or will they be in touch?
Finally can anyone recommend a good ROM for this phone. Thanks

Discussions on how to get around paying VAT are not allowed on this forum, consider this a final warning to everyone.

Posts such as the conductors are fine, as they are just advising on the correct procedure.

[Nothing to do with being a mod] if they are offering a crappy exchange rate, send them a screen shot of your card statement that paypal charged and you should only have to pay VAT on what you actually paid.

They also don't do over the phone payments- its cash or cheque for the postman- which isn't the end of the world. If you're not in to collect it- you can do so from the local sorting office (and pay the VAT on it at that point).

In which case- you collect it from your local postal sorting office- and pay the attendant there by cash or cheque the determined tax/duty/vat owed.

Its the same as picking up any parcel the postman couldn't deliver because you weren't in- only you have to pay the An Post employee at the counter in the sorting office.

Note- no credit cards, debit cards or other unusual payment methods- just cash or cheque.

Just one word of warning, and it may not really be anything at all.

Myself and a friend had the Zuk Z1, both of us really like it until their battery failed.

My friends battery failed after 6 months, mine is after failing now (close to 18 months). Phone still works, but battery lasts 3 hours, it was lasting the day last week.

Small sample size, but not a great track record!

He went down the route of getting the phone fixed, buying a battery online worked fine til he slipped on a ladder and landed on his phone (3 days after getting it fixed!)

I bought mine off a seller on ebay, Seller is based in China but phone shipped from France. I am probably technically covered under EU law, but I can not imagine it would be easy to sort! Phone was bought in November of 2015.
