1.7mb vodafone broadband outside Macroom

    Hi All.

My broadband has slowed down to 1.7mb having clocked it on a speed test. I am paying €45 per month for this "service". Living 1 mile outside the town of Macroom on the Millstreet side. I have tried changing DSL cables, turning off all other wifi devices in the house, ringing tech support to run line tests, plug out phone line and even did a speed test at a neighbours house who also has vodafone broadband. They are also running at 1.7 mb per sec. It used to be at 5 mb last year and this was acceptable but now it is a joke. Any advice? Do I have any better alternatives?

If you are on the MRW1_E01 cabinet (and I suspect you are), it has been scheduled for upgrade now for at least a couple of years. Anyone connected to this cabinet is getting trickling speeds at peak hours (5pm-10pm). The issue is all about congestion.

This cabinet is part of the rural broadband Fibre to the Home (FTTH) development scheme announced with swashbuckling panache by our great leaders both local and executive. Seems now like it was nothing more than a desperate stunt to shore up some rural votes in the last general election, but perhaps not.

Not sure how the rural broadband FTTH is progressing, or even if it is progressing at all. It is not vodafone's fault either. They are only renting the lines from eir. Eir are responsible for carrying out network upgrade and maintenance on all phone lines. Cable (Virgin, UPC, etc.) is a different matter, but that's not available in Macroom. Your only other option would be a 4G dongle from one of the mobile companies, but those are also subject to congestion depending on the area covered.

Its not a cab in the normal sense. Its an RSU or mini exchange. They're all delayed.
