TDI timing adjusted, now car hard to start and drinks diesel

    As per the title, adjusted the camshaft timing on my 05 golf 1.9 TDI from 4.4° to 0.0° (what it's supposed to be).

    Now, the car takes about 5 attempts to start up when cold and has to be revved for a few seconds to keep going when it does start.

    Don't think it's the MAF as I tested it in 3'rd WOT up a hill and specified and actual values are similar, with actual values able to go >800.

    It was mentioned to me that it might be the fuel temp sensor, but when I checked this, it increases steadily when the car is idle up until it reaches about 53°.

    Anybody have any other ideas on what it could be or other tests I could do with the VCDS?

    It depends what you are referring to, the camshaft timing can only be changed by physically moving the pulley (as with timing belt job) but there is a torsen value that can be viewed with vcds, it that what you are referring to? How old is the timing belt

    Are they not the same?

    The camshaft was twisted counter clockwise 4.4°.

    The one that can be adjusted with VCDS is with the older VE engines, from what I've read.

    My mistake I misread your year :) You may be suffering the dreaded camshaft lobe wear....

    It says all of my glow plugs are shagged alright, but nothing else!

    At the risk of sounding smart, why don't you change it back to 4.4 degrees?

    Yeah that's the obvious question alright haha.

    Supposedly the range of where the timing is supposed to be for these engines is between +/-3°, with 0° being the optimal setting, so 4.4° is a bit out from what it should be. It just got me thinking that something else is wrong that having timing advanced to 4.4 is counteracting?

    Maybe something else is out of kilter but if it was my car I'd change it back to 4.4 and forget about it.
