Failed NCT emissions

hi, my wife s 2003 micra failed the NCT due to emissions which was quite frustrating as we had a new catalytic converter fitted last year for the NCT and presumed there should be no issue with emissions this time around.

took the car back to the guy who fitted the CC last year to see if he could adjust it to pass the NCT and he could not and so it failed again on the re-test

this guy i used seemed nice but his equipment left a lot to be desired and i had to wait for a few days until his faulty emissions tester was fixed again.

i need to find a good competent garage who can resolve this emissions problem and know what they are doing.

can anyone recommend anyone, i live in drumcondra so it would be good if they are close but if i have to go further for a good guy thats ok

post up last years fail sheet and this years, the cat is only one small piece of the emissions puzzle :)

How much was the converter fitted last year ? cheap spurious ones will only get through 1 year 1 test , so much so that some people go as far as storing them off the car between annual testing, replacing with straight pipe in between.

Catalytic converters are considered a 'for life' part, the question is did you find why the original cat failed?

Are the engines in these known for trouble?

Hi sorry for delay in replying

The cat and fitting kit cost 425 so was not cheap
I will post the sheets from last year and this year when I figure out how to do it later

    Engine oil temp 84.C
Low idle CO. 0.72 vol%. Fail

    840 rpm. HC 356ppm N/a

    High Idle. Lambada 0.98. Pass
    2.740rpm. CO 0.52 vol%. Fail
    HC 181ppm Pass

This is my test results for emissions

Lambda sensor, leaky injectors, malfunctioning air sensor - MAP, Temperature, Pressure (whatever is in the car).

Unfortunately 425 is not going to get you a super quality cat! That said your car is running a bit rich and not running all that well from the emissions results. This is increasing your Co reading which is not that far out. A service, some diptane and an Italian tune-up might actually get you through in this case and I rarely am an advocate for that approach as a solution.

Guys heres a similar one for yous.
The missus had her 206 in and failed with a leaking exhaust (getting sorted today)
also high idle ,could his be from the leak?

    High Idle Lambda 1.11 fail
    (2,990rpm) CO 0.04% pass
    HC 16ppm pass

    Cheers

Just bumping this post as are curious regarding leaking exhaust and effect on lambda reading, last year my lambda reading was .02 and this year is 0.3 the limit. Before the car was tested last year i had a section of exhaust mainly the back box plus piping to middle box and then piping that was cut and welded to the original 18yr old exhaust as the guy doing the exhaust said that trying to detach the bolted fitting could do more damage than good.

Your exhaust is likely leaking, maybe a few small rust holes etc, you have too much air by the time it gets to the tailpipe where they take a measurement. How old is the exhaust?

Copied this from a previous post that i posted,it beats one finger typing it again.

It was done just over a year ago so i,d say welding the new to a rusty 18 year exhaust might be the problem..

Maybe the rusty section now needs replacing also.....?
