Fairly minimal knowledge of cars here. I'd appreciate any advice on what possible purchases I should consider.

In terms of what qualities I would be looking for, I mainly want something as reliable as possible (assuming regular servicing), and I suppose reasonably comfortable too. Not overly bothered if it's a slightly "boring" drive. Price-wise I could spend anything around the 10-20 thousand euro range.

In an average week the car would need to do mostly urban commutes (fairly short trips). However, there would usually also be 1 to 3 longer journeys each week of 100km plus (some on the motorway but often involving rural back roads).

Can you think of any possibilities I should look into?

I'm in the same boat as you (both in terms of car knowledge and requirements). I've pretty much settled on a Golf Mk7 with a 1.4l engine. You should be able to pick up a second hand one in your price range.

There is a wide variety of cars that you could buy for between 10k and 20k. Could you give a few more details like what size and type car you're interested in, hatchback, saloon? What do you currently drive for reference?

Nearly everything these days will be reliable so I wouldn't rule anything out on that score.

You can buy almost anything in the 10-20k range but new you are limited to superminis like Yaris, Polo etc and you will be up close to 20k

    For 20k you could get a 5 year old 5 series, e class, a6 and probably a 4 year old smaller 3 series, c class or a4.

2-3 years old Passat, Mondeo, Mazda 6

1 year old Golf, Focus etc...

So pretty much anything you want, add a couple of years to each and you are pushing down towards lower end.

Personally I would always go for the higher class of a car and go back a few years but that's just me.

For you, a nice Golf would be my advice, pretty much all the car you will ever need.
