Fire place restoration

    Hi

I have an old fire place. It is a slate surround with painted marble effect and the insert part is cast iron with tiles. I wanted to get the cast iron part restored / cleaned. There is a bit of rust on it and I wanted to get it shined up a bit.

I have been trying to figure it out. Would a steel brush do the job with some grate polish and buff it. Or will it need a lot more .

If anyone knows of a place that does this work and has contact details I would be grateful either.

Is there a senior citizens group in your area. The people in them often have a heap of knowledge in such areas.
A strange answer to come from me, I Know! But here is why; I was recently at a breakdown in such a meeting place and while I was fixing the boiler, a few of the men showed huge interest in my equipment, and lamented that they had to work with just a few adjustable spanners and lump hammer.
Anyway one of them was a (all retired) plumber, the other a mechanic and there were painter, electricians, a dentist a nurse, etc inside in the group. I thought "what a wealth of untapped information". Some of them were members of a "shed" group that were into restoring stuff.

Glad I got that off my chest, but it could be a channel worth visiting.
