Central Heating Problema

    Hi guys

I wonder could anybody help me? My oil central heating is acting up. When I turn on my heating it fires up and the Rads get hot and stay hot for a small while. They then cool down to the point that the rads are cold and the heating comes back on again. I've checked the pump and it seems to be working fine (opened the screw and checked that it's pumping free), I have oil in the tank, I've checked the water tanks in the attic and they both are full. I changed the photocell only a few months back after another issue.

When it goes off I go out to the burner and turn up the dial on the control box and it fires up again.
I tend to get a lot of air in the rad closest to the pump.

Any ideas what could be wrong or anything else I should be checking!

Thanks for any info in advance.

Assuming that the boiler is running ok (proved by a service), you may have a failing pump, or really dirty heating system. Any sludge in the bottom of you small attic tank?
Could be a faulty motorized valve or thermostat also.

This might be a problem that's best to get a professional to check.

Ya I'll have to get a professional to look at it. I only checked the water level in the small tank never looked to see was there any sludge in it.

Could be a faulty Boiler stat.
Check the bottoms of the rads. They should be as hot as the top. If they're stone cold then you probably have sludge

It's fairly hot at the bottom alright. I reckon there probably is some sludge but your probably spot on with the stat. I was onto a plumber earlier and he reckons the same thing. He is calling Monday to have a look and give it the once over anyway

    Thanks for the info

One thing you could check is that the pump is circulating "after" the boiler cut out on the thermostat. The pump should be still circulating. If someone has been at the boiler wiring they may have by mistake connected the circulating pump live wire to the output live from the thermostat which would be incorrect.
