Do GPs know your psychiatric details?

I stayed at a psychiatric ward for a few weeks after experiencing a bit of psychosis. Will every GP I visit in Ireland now know that I was in the psychiatric ward? As in do they have a centralised system where they can see your psychiatric details on the computer?

Your own GP may have gotten a discharge report from them, if you gave the hospital their name. No other GPs will know about it.

No, unfortunately you'll have to tell them yourself, or allow them to request your record from your existing GP who should have that information assuming you were referred in.

I experienced a bit of minor psychosis a few months ago and checked myself into a psychiatric ward for a few weeks. Will every GP now know that I was at the psychiatric ward? As in is there a centralised database that they can see these details on the computer? It was a very brief once off period of minor psychosis, I'm worried now that if I visit a GP, they'll assume I have psychosis which I don't.
If there is a central database, how does that work, for example John O'Brien is a really common name, so if they checked the computer, they'd see hundreds of John O'Briens.

Yes they do as the first point of call unless you get sectioned is to your GP. And the likes of the mental health services share your files for out treatment. I have been in the system.

Nope, GPs have their own standalone databases. The hospital might communicate with your own GP when you're discharged.

Why would it be a bad thing if they did know.

They won't. It's a pity we don't have a centralised system as it would be handy. If you go to a different GP or hospital it would be great if, with your permission, they could access records online in a fast manner. Rather they have to reach out to the old GP and request them. That means that your records can be fragmented if you've been to multiple GP's.

There's a big programme being done in the HSE to bring in a centralised patient records system, the head of IT in the HSE was on the Last Word last week talking about it.

It will be a couple of years, at the moment they have multiple patient records systems, and GPs generally don't have access to it at all.

Your GP usually gets a discharge letter giving details.
These is No central register or anything like that though.
You can request that no details are shared with your GP if you want FWIW
Personally as a GP I would prefer to know
    Good luck and keep well
