BOOKED A HOSTEL

Guys I need some advice here please.

I booked this hostel for march 2nd to 5th for 8 of us. The hostel emailed me asking me to pay half up front. I said that was not stated when i was booking and refused. They said they needed to confirm the booking and asked me to pay 400 which I agreed and told them take it from my card I provided. They said they couldn't and to do a bank transfer and sent on bank details. Alarm bells were going off in my head and I said it to my housemates which 1 told me when he was booking a place in the Dam last summer he too had to pay by bank transfer. They had being emailing me off there email address from there website so I thought surely is legit. Did the transfer on the 24th of Jan. at which point I emailed them to confirm same. They told me it would take 5 days etc etc. I emailed them again yesterday as more than enough time had passed for it to go through and no reply. Same story with today.

Has anyone had experience with this type of thing? Should I call my bank immediately?

How did you book? I usually go through a site called hostelworld. They take a very small fee up front and sort of are your guarantor for the hostel. Hostels do want the money up front, usually when booking online they take a small fee like 10% and you pay the rest on arrival.

Search for your hostel on hostelworld, if they show up there they should be fairly legit.

Thanks for replying! They are on booking.com hostelworld and most websites. I actually booked through their own website as it ended up being cheaper than going through a booking company. Amsterdam Hostel Leidseplein is the name of the hostel.

I've had it happen once but I knew it was legit as people mentioned in the reviews. Read reviews and suss it out, pay by PayPal if needs be but it's not common and only happened to me once in about 50 hostels

It's probably legit, they just want money up front if they think there's a chance you won't show up.
