Hi just a short question in relation to a query.

Parked a car in a car park last Saturday and came back to it, there was a note on the car saying sorry and left their phone number.

The left front wing is slightly damage and got a quote to get it repaired.

The person wants to pay the garage instead off handing over the money directly to me, the amount is very small less than €300 Euro.

    What's my rights ?

Do I let them pay the garage or insist they pay me directly.

    Or go though their insurance?

You have the choice as to where it gets repaired, not sure what the issue is with paying you or direct to garage. You're lucky they were decent enough to leave the note.

    Your choice really.

You can insist he pays you directly, pays the garage or you could decide to go through insurance.

You have no obligation to actually get your car repaired and can just pocket the cash if you so choose.

As long as the repairs are paid for whats the issue. He is probably just wary that you will take the 300 and not get the car repaired.

Crash? More like a fender bender..

Indeed, I'd be the same and rather pay the garage than handing over dosh to someone who could just keep driving with the damage.

In this case, as the guy actually stopped, left a note and is willing to pay the cash right away with no qualms about who does the repair, I'd let them pay the garage direct. There's no problem. Your car gets repaired and it was all done nicely.

You could have came back to a damaged car with no note and been stuck with a repair bill yourself.

If you do decide to let him pay directly make it very clear that he pays in full before your car goes near the Garage.
Plenty of similar cases where the person who caused the damage refused to pay for the work after the Car was repaired.....I know it can be chased up, but it's a long head-wrecking process to get it sorted. And you won't get your Car back until the Bill is paid.

He may have only left the note due to the presence of a witness or two

None of his business what the OP does with the money. He caused X amount of damage for which he is liable. The Op is entitled to be recompensed for the value of repairing his Car. He can do whatever he likes with the money (Coke & Hookers if he so desires ;)).
If somebody crashed into your car and wrote it off are you expected to buy another car with the compensation received ? Of course you're not. It's your decision if you want to replace the car, buy a new Kitchen, go on holidays, etc.

If you're unsure OP, just go to your insurance company and let them handle it. That's what you pay them for. Although it doesn't seem like there's much to be concerned about with him paying the garage directly.

He wants to be sure he's only paying for the actual work and not lining your pocket.

Not sure what the issue would be. I paid out of pocket for a minor tip years ago. Makes no odds to me if they spent the cash getting the car repaired or filling the boot with jelly babies.

Oh i know its none of the guys business but maybe the guy is making sure that once he paid the first 300 the guy wouldnt come back looking for another 300 and another 300 etc.

Fair play to the guy for leaving a note and number. I would think that he wants to pay the garage directly so he can get a receipt of some sort whereas if he just gave you the money, you could say you never received anything from him *if* it ever went further.

Personally I would side with this guy as if it were me and I gave someone €300, I have no official document to say that I gave them the money whereas with a garage they will issue a receipt and put it in their books.

I would say let him pay the garage. You are lucky he was decent enough to leave a note, return the good deed and both of ye are coming out feeling fairly treated.

If he doesn't want someone coming back again and again go through the insurance.

Even reporting no fault crashes to your insurance affects your premium, 3 and it increases.
