Broken lock nut

So I got a puncture this evening in my brand new tyre, just bought it a month ago. When I was attempting to open the locknut the top sheared off. Thinking back to when the tyre was changed the clown that changed it I remember used the air gun on it and no doubt made ****e of it.

So I have the two bits of the lock nut, is the best way just to try and hammer them back together? Or is there a better approach?

weld a socket on the locknut. Weld from inside of the socket to get a good weld and then put the rachet bar on it. The socket will be fecked after but at least you will get it off.

Also you could try to hammer on the socket over the lock nut but this was not possible for me

weld a nut or socket onto it

A quick heat of oxy and it will fly out. Leave the welders and 3/4 Halfords sockets at home for this one.

Put a can of emergency puncture repair spray into the tyre and then drive to a tyre place - they always have a set of tools that get most of these out.

Better still - go to garage that used tge airgun and get them to do it.

Had same issue myself a couple of years ago over 100km from home - needed to be towed and had to stay overnight and it took about 4 hours for garage to get it off. Took rest of lock nuts off as well.

You could try popping it back on and hope for the best, but when your using the wheel brace to open the nut, use quick sharp movement to 'shock' it open, if you just ease pressure onto it you prob won't budge it.
Where abouts are you based? I have lock removal sockets but not sure if they'd be any use, if you were close by I could give it a go.

Also heating the nut with oxy wont be much use if you've no way of turning the nut. You'll also damage your alloy.

You'd be surprised. I needed locking nuts taken off once and called to 5 tyre places asking them to do it and none of them wanted to know anything about it.

Yea because they would give a considerable amount of time depending on the structure of the locking nut and if they had to charge the time wouldn't you be the first one complaining about how you were ripped off by such a tyre centre to remove four nuts.

    Ammmmmm, no.

I wasn't asking them to do it for free, I had just bought the car and was getting new wheels and tyres put on. I had bought the wheels from a tyre place and they wouldn't do it for me. Then I tried every other place in town that I could think of, and none of them were would do it either. I was well prepared to pay for it, and would, in fact, have given them a considerable amount of money for the job as i knew how screwed I'd be if I got a puncture.

But thanks for assuming I'm that kinda guy.

Managed to get a place to do it for 20 quid a few days later anyway, took them about 10 mins per nut, fwiw.
