Hey all, so admittedly I know very little about cars but the time has come where I need to upgrade.

My budget is €12k and primarily im looking at a hatchback. Focus, Golf, Astra....something along those lines.

Now I had it in my head that I was 100% going for Diesel and it was going to be a Golf or Focus most likely. I just got off the phone with a mechanic I know and in passing I mentioned how I was looking at getting a new car and mentioned what I was looking at.

He was saying to stay away from Golfs due to price, experiences hes had/heard about. Interestingly he also said I should consider going Petrol and not Diesel. He was saying more and more people are going back to Petrol.

I would love to hear peoples thoughts and any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Im open minded on any car/make really but I do want something reliable and nice look at. Again, hatchback primarily. Was thinking of something around 2012 and up. Will be going through a dealer rather than private mainly for security.

My current car is a 2005 so badly need to get something newer and nicer to drive.

Petrol is all well and good , but the majority of cars in your budget were sold as diesels 2011 to 2015, so you'd be limiting your choice drastically.

True, again though, Im not overly fussy on the car as long as its in good condition and looks decent.

I should mention I drive on average 40 - 50km a day. Half an hour to and from work and maybe another 2 hour round trip journey thrown in once/occasionally twice a week. Nothing to hectic.

Honda Civic do anything for you? Probably as reliable as you will get, 1.8 petrol would be the one to get but they are rare enough in the newer model.

    For example:

Is that 1.3 civic a petrol or a hybrid?

The IMA hybrid was a saloon only and they stopped making it back in 2010.

Ah ok, is it likely to be a 1.4 and not a 1.3 then, or did they have a 1.3 petrol on sale?

It's a typo in the advert. That Civic has a 1.4 litre petrol engine.

Get the diesel. Emissions tests are way way way way easier to pass for diesel at NCT.
