I'm looking to possibly buy a car from the North of Ireland in the next few weeks and I'm wondering about the road tax, if it's a 2008 model will I come in on the lower tax bracket, or will will I be exempt at all with an import .

If anyone could share some advice on the whole process of bringing a car in that world be really helpful

The annual motor tax and the VRT amount are linked to the co2 emissions of the car. That's what determines if it's cheap, expensive or whatever.

    Revenue have a VRT calculator
Motortax.ie has the tax rates by co2 emissions.

So will the year determine what the tax is, I'm just a little confused with the potential import.

    Thanks for the reply

It depends when in 2008 it was registered.
Pretty July 1 is engine size. Post is Co2.
    Check out motortax.ie

What kind of car is it?

January 08 onwards Imports are co2 tax regardless.
All imports are co2 VRT regardless.

OP you can get de chape tax on any car first regged after Jan 2008. Just check the co2 rating as all cars are different, and tax varies.

Looking at a citroen c5 estate either 1.6 or 2.0 diesel. I had a 2007 c5 estate already. I'm just trying to weigh it all up before committing

The CO2 emissions will be on the V5 document with the car, it's important to go with what's here rather than assuming it matches that of a similar car, there's different releases of engines and different specs that could bring a car in to a higher tax band.

It was around 2009/2010 before the C5 got revisions to lower its emissions afaik. Upto that they would have had slightly higher co2 and motor tax ~ €390 v €280 with the revised emissions. Hardly a deal breaker though.

Not always, if the CC rate is cheaper it will be applied for January-June cars.

From a Revenue document I have:-

A private car first registered abroad between 1 January 2008 and 30 June 2008 inclusive and subsequently registered in Ireland will be taxed on whichever is the lesser of the motor tax rates based on engine or CO2 emissions.

A private car first registered abroad after 1 July 2008 and subsequently registered in Ireland will be taxed on the CO2 rate.
