Hi all recently purchased a car from the UK and I have applied for the logbook. Can anyone tell me roughly how long it will take to receive the UK log book back in my name? I would like to book a VRT appointment asap. Tia

You won't get the log book (V5) in your name as you are not a UK resident.
If things work out you may receive an Export Cert with your name and address on it.
Personally, I would ring the DVLA and see what they have to say.

Why did you purchase a Car from somebody in the UK without a Logbook ?

Thanks, I was given the V5 with the car and it was up to me to send it off. I was under the impression the impression that I would receive the V5 back in my name. Hoping the DVLA will send some sort of confirmation back to me saying that the car has been exported from the Uk as I need to VRT soon. Thanks for the reply

As said the DVLA will not transfer ownership to a non UK resident. You need to contact the DVLA in Swansea and see if they will send you a certificate of permanent export for the car. The VRT office will accept this with the car at it's inspection.

Unfortunately younglad, you shouldn't have sent off the V5 at all. If you looked closely at the V5 there is a small section called "Notification of permanent export". You should have torn this bit off the V5 and given it to whoever you bought the car from. They then send that off to the DVLA and that's everything done with them. You keep the rest of the V5 and use that to get screwed for VRT etc.

As Bazz said above you need to contact the DVLA now and tell them your story.

Ok thanks for that, looks like I have made an absolute mess of the whole process. Bought the car off a dealer so thought once the v5 was sent off Id recieve something back from the DVLA. Will ring the DVLA this evening and try rectify everything. Hopefully I won't get stung too badly for going over the 30 day limit. Appreciate the help. Thanks

Didn't make a mess probably at all. Download the V756 application form from DVLA and fill it out - I used to get the cert within 10 days I think - ring them and they'll tell you the turnaround time.

the Dealer did it absolutely correctly, the opposite of what usually is reported here!

You live and learn I guess

But won't the V5 just go to the previous keeper and not to the OP?

Just in regards to this, after spamming my sister with about 15 messages saying do not leave the dealer without the v5c part she needs for the VRT she did it anyway, as the dealer insisted he needed to do it. So she's coming back with nothing. Since the dealer has sent the full v5c form off, she's going to need to fill out this form. Under section 3 "Declarations", does she tick "was not given to me by previous keeper" or is "with the DVLA for changes"?
