Kickboard - Dishwasher Cut Cover Help

    Hi Guys,

I got a kitchen in last year and there is one thing about it thats annoying me.

We have a dishwasher in built, the guy cut the top off the kick board under the dishwasher to accommodate the door opening on it. So when you open the dishwasher, down the bottom of the door goes into the hole in the kick board a bit. if it wasn't cut out it would be hitting the kick board.

The problem is the hole he cut out is very noticeable (to me only probably) and its annoying me.

When i open my kitchen door now the first thing my eyes are drawn to is this black hole in the kick board.

The kitchen is a off white colour, cream or something i cant remember, which is why its probably so noticeable. anyways im looking to find some way of covering this hole on the back of the kickboard with something white-ish while still allowing the dishwasher to open.

Things im considering so far but cant find for sale online anywhere to try!

    1. Something like a Brush Door Draught excluder in white attached to the back of the kick board, so the dishwasher door will still open through the brush. Problem, i cant find a white one of these anywhere to buy.

    2. some sort of rubber or similar sheet in white i can cut to size and attach to the back of the kick board that will still allow the dishwasher door to open.

    3. Some sort of spring loaded panel in wood or plastic, that will go down when the dishwasher hits it and spring back up when its closed.

I dunno, im hoping there is already something to cover these kick board cuts and i just dont know about it but you guys might!!

    Thanks

I have the same in my kitchen.

I have off white units but the pelmet, cornice & kicker board are wood colour.

But, it is not as noticeable with this combination.

This guy seems to have white plastic panel fitted behind gap

This may work if affixed to top of kicker board where cut is (I'd imagine it could get dirty looking, in time!)

    OR

You could replace the kicker board for dark grey/ black...so not noticeable!!

    same problem here

Cool thanks , he doesn't say In his guide what that plastic piece is or where he got it.

To be honest if the cut in my kickboard was as small as that I wouldn't be worried about it. But the kitchen installer completely butchered it. Along with loads more things in the kitchen and I wouldn't mind it was from an expensive kitchen place.

It's not a straight cut like that he used a jigsaw and cut it so the sides are curved.

Anyways, I might try that stick on stuff. It might come loose though but it's worth a go.

    Thanks

I only had to take about 5mm off mine, did it with a router. I also sealed the cut edge with some 'iron-on' edging.

Maybe a new bit of kickboard and some careful measuring would be the best.

Most good dishwasher brands have an option for a sliding door mechanism that raises the door as you open it thus eliminating the need for the cut out, failing this in your case I believe IKEA do an aftermarket solution for people who want to use their kitchens but not their dishwashers. Obviously you would have to replace the kicker but it would be problem solved for a total cost less than €50

That scenario shouldn't happen, I have fitted dozens of integrated dishwashers and if the outer door panel is fitted according to the instruction sheet that comes with the machine the door should never catch on the kicker board, if you can get a new piece of kick board to match up take the dishwasher out and get it set up properly. the only time I find it difficult to set them up correctly is if the floor is only tiled as far as the kicker and its uneven further in under the dw.

So true, I only tiled the bit I needed - and had to raise the floor 5mm with levelling compound to match the joining wood floor. Behind the kickboard is not tiled or raised.

Thanks for th advice guys. Seeing your images of how your kick boards are cut is eye opening. I think you will get a good laugh when you see the cut the installer put in mine.

I'm not home until tomorrow night, I'll post an image then.

    Thanks a lot

It can happen, even with a correctly fitted door on the integrated DW. Some people prefer the kick board nearer the profile of the press fronts (as looks the case with Steve's pic along with the OP). You can see where the butcher attempted to hold the KB in place and drilled the screw too far forward, thus ripping the front veneer. Plus he jigsawed way too much material off the board.
