Can anyone recommend a kettle. Just looking for a standard enough kettle that will last longer than a bloody year. And that has a clear window to see the water level.

Sick of going through kettles. I've been using filtered water exclusively in the latest kettle and alas 14 months later, it's died.

A standard enough kettle that will last more than a year , you wont find too many. Google siemens tw86103, we have an older version bought in the 1980s still works perfectly.

sugar, is that the way things are gone where a kettle will hardly last a year !!

I could add the words "planned obsolescence" to half the threads in this forum.
Few appliances are built to last these days, unless you're looking at "commercial grade" stuff that costs at least twice as much. :(

Aldi have "Bullit" kettles in stock. Have one a year now, good as new still. 30 euro.
It replaced a Morphy Richards which looked great, but melted its el. innards in less than 12 months.

    Thanks all.

So from what's been said seems like a bit of a waste spending a lot of money on a kettle.

    Get a Philips or Bosch.

I've had a Kenwood stainless steel round kettle (ie not jug style) for years and it's still going strong.

Got it in Power City, can't remember how much it was - definitely not the cheapest in the shop but it looks good (IMO) and has lasted well. If it dies I'd definitely go for similar again.

I'm on my 3rd kettle in 16 months. Two Russell Hobbs and now a morphy Richards. The €10 tesco one has outlasted them all.

+1 my white plastic Kenwood jug kettle is well over 10 years old and still going strong.

I've seen mention of those old 'heritage' brands like Morphy Richards and Russell Hobbs, they are brand names that were purchased off the shelf, they are now made in China and the brand name counts for nothing, you might as well buy a 'no brand' appliance in Aldi or Lidl.

Dont know about Bosch, but had Philips kettle, that lasted about 18 months. Got another similar one as I liked it and just thought I had been unlucky. It gave up the ghost in about a year! :(

I think I might just buy cheap and see how I go.

Sounds like I could spend 100 Euro on a kettle and it may not even last a year.

The outlaws are very hard on their kettles, kettle brimmed every time and boiled easily over 20 times a day meaning kettles only lasted 6 months at best. The kitchen aid kettle was the last bought and is doing well still. They also installed a quooker tap which has cut down the leccy costs and replacement kettles majorly.

Bought one in Tesco yesterday. A Tesco branded one, 1.5 litre rapid boil. 17 Euro. Cheap as chips really. Will see if it lasts now compared to stuff 3 and 4 times the price.

Maybe a silly suggestion - complete non-hot-drinker here - but an olde time non-electric kettle is likely to last a while surely?

Plus a kettle whistle is nice (or maybe that's just me)

I'm sure you can get them somewhere still. Just don't do a Rodney and forget you've put it on is all

I have a 13 year old Breville kettle and toaster both still going strong. Kettle is so bloody loud though!

I bought one for my gas hob thinking it would be lovely. It take ages to heat compared with an electric kettle. It's in the shed now.

I don't know how I ended up on this thread at 11PM on a Saturday night, but for what it's worth we've had a €6 Argos kettle for 3 years now and it gets more use than anything in the house. It looks ****e if that matters, but it was €6 and boils a lot of water.

On an induction it would be as quick as an electric kettle. Induction is really fast

Really, really fast on some as they have a turbo feature for boiling water. Not as efficent though. However in the aparment I used to live in having it on the hob saved a non-insignificant amount of space!

Ended up buying a beaut of a Tesco kettle for 16 Euro :)

    3kw rapid boil supposedly.

Curious, how long should it take to boil 1.5 litres of water from cold ? Roughly.

As with TVs, treat the features printed on the box with scepticism. 3kW is normal for a kettle.

With electricity and heat, all of the energy is converted, no one kettle is more 'efficient' than another. One might be slower than the next but they will both consume the same amount of energy to boil a given amount of water.

For what its worth and hope it adds some value to the thread I have a Morphy Richards Accents jug kettle for just over 3 years and still in good working order. I use it on average maybe 3/4 times per day There is a lot of limescale in my water too to note. Unsure how much it cost as got it through a work reward scheme.
