Runway limits at ACE

I wonder if you can help... I was having a conversation with my folks over the weekend about Lanzarote and they insist that one time (a long time ago) they went there it was on a 747.

I wondered, to their annoyance, if they were maybe getting trips to the Canaries confused and that perhaps they'd flown to Tenerife North as they used to be regular visitors to the north of the island and I know that airport can handle 747s (for all the wrong reasons).

Anyway, I still doubt that ACE is long enough to handle a 747 unless perhaps it's refuelling in FUE prior to return.

    Any thoughts?

I was in ACE last week and was talking to a guy who mentioned that he had seen Air Atlanta 747s there. Not sure if they operated from DUB but it appears 747 could operate in there.

I know its not the same, but I flew into it years ago on a L1011.

It has a 7800ft runway. That's more than enough for a 747 to mainland Europe.

They did mention the airline being Icelandic, so that makes perfect sense then.

Looks like I have to admit I was wrong to my folks. Again.

    Cheers everyone!

From memory Iberia used to operate jumbos to the Canaries from Madrid.

    100 min ?

    Was just thinking that

Cruising Speed 2158 KPH (from Dr Google)
Distance from DUB to ACE 2786.46 KM

So 100 mins with take off and landing would be roughly right

Would make the canaries a lot closer!!!

I was one of the flight attendants working for air atlanta during 2003,we used a 763er for most of the summer season. We were trained on the 747 for a few flights at the end of the season as the 767 was moved to some company in Africa.
We flew the 747 from Dublin to Knock,Cork,Lourdes,Malaga,Faro,Punta Cana and Orlando sanford.
The only time the aircraft had any performance issues was the flight routing from Dublin- Knock-punta cana. After assessing the weight after loading in knock it became apparent we needed to go and fuel up at shannon as there was a heap load of golf sets loaded (unexpected). The pilots loved Knock they said it reminded them of flying in a sim.
    Flying to/
from ace didn't test the aircraft's limits too much.
We did operate a flight from Manchester to margarita, takeoff fuel load was 145 tons.

If it were to operate that flight it would prob take 2 hrs or more, getting the bird out over the sea at normal speed then accelerating.
There are a few really interesting threads on airliners.net about some of the stranger routes the concorde performed.
