Hi guys, I'm hoping to change cars in the next few weeks. I would like people's advice & experiences with diesal cars from the year 2008-2011. I'm thinking a passat 2.0L cr tdi. I was considering going to uk for one. I'm also open to hearing other people's opinions? I don't commute to work, I can walk it's less than 2 minutes. I could go petrol? I'm 28 and I'd like something not too boring.
    Any opinions welcome.

If you don't have proper use for a diesel car then go with a petrol car instead. Diesel cars don't like short journeys and won't even be warmed up so you won't benefit from one. Also there are alot of different cars you could buy between 2008 and 2011, a budget figure would be more useful in regards recommendations.

Hi bazz if I go for petrol I'll prob only spend up to 6k and stay 1.4 petrol as tax is reasonably cheap. My weekly mileage would be less than 100miles. What petrol cars would you recommend?

The tax doesn't go by engine size after 2008.

So if you were to go for a diesel you'd get a Passat which is a decent size car but if you go for petrol your going to restrict yourself to a 1.4 which will get you a small hatchback...why? That doesn't make any sense....Oh yeah I see, its so you can save €200 a year on your tax....good thinking, base your decision on the tax class of the car.

You'd probably get a 1.4 TSi Passat on that budget:

Timing chains can stretch on those engines so look for proof that it has been replaced. Also post 2008 cars were taxed on emissions (co2) so some will be lower or higher to tax on the old engine based system.

If you're willing to go a bit higher on motor tax and a little more daring then something like this might be worth a look:

Tax is 570 v 385 on the 1.4 Passat but some of the 5dr Civics are 390 to tax on the co2 system.

This gets my vote, on budget, 2008, loads of room in the back, prestige brand and the tax wont kill you either

Size of the car doesn't bother me. I have a mk4 golf now and its grand. Before I bought the house I had a 12 a5.
Because I'm doing so little mileage a petrol would be fine I.e. 1.4 (yearly tax 385) pre 08, there is a big jump in price between 06&07 golfs and a 08 golf.
I'd ideally like a diesal for longer journeys for the power and economy.
I'm just trying to see if there are any value for money diesals out there that wouldn't brake the bank..

No point in going diesel at your mileage. Unless you're doing a decent motorway run a couple times a week, you will run into expensive problems. And even if you didn't have any problems, you certainly won't see economy with a diesel doing small miles.

At 100 miles a week electric is the best solution, once you have a house. They are constantly complaining on the EV forum how bad the residuals are. Though you might need to up the purchase price but the savings on running costs will be substantial.
