Hi, 26/m/no license. I was thinking about maybe learning to drive and getting a license, just 'to have', so I can give people small lifts and so on, since I don't drink.

If I have a license can I drive other people's cars with their permission, or do I need insurance? And If I need insurance, does it need to be a full(expensive) policy?

You always need to be insured to drive a car, whether it's yours or someone else's. If your insurance does not include you driving other people's cars (once that other car is insured), you'd need to be added by that other person onto their policy as a named driver.

1 thing to note, you make mention of giving people lifts as you don't drink. While on a permit, anyone accompanying you must be in a fit condition to drive. So they can not drink either.

Thanks- you're right, and after looking into it some more, the whole thing is really not for me, just a Monday morning random thought :D
