Claims in long warranty

it's interesting that a lot if people are rightly drawn to the long warranties that are offered such as Hyundais 5 year warranty, Kias 7 year warranty and Mitsubishi 8 year warranty.

Has anyone here however actually made a successful claim for something outside of what would be considered a normal (3 years) warranty period now that some of these cars are starting to become old enough to be out of warranty.

If so, what was it for and how difficult was it?

I'm just interested as i see a few posters claiming they're not worth the paper they're written on

It varies a lot by manufacturer. I would say Hyundais is one of the best offerings on the market, that and Renaults (revised) 5 year offering.

Ford and Kias 7 year have a mileage limit of 120k kms iirc which in reality will be greatly less than 7 years.

VAG group offer 2 years unlimited mileage extended to 3 years and 90k if you keep the mileage down. Which I think is the same as Mr.T.

There are huge cases of swings and roundabouts from what I can see. With Hyundai they will give you a flywheel or the likes 4 years and 364 days into the warranty, no hassle but at 5 years and 1 days it's good luck and good bye, we are done. VW might officially cut you off after as little as 2 years but will entertain and make sizeable goodwill contributions up to 7 years, so in reality a 3 year VAG warranty may work out better down the line than the 7 year offered by Ford.

You get less and less covered each year, it usually defaults to engine and gearbox only after 3-4 years

Thats interesting tfb. Ive always thought the likes of Toyota would offer great goodwill outside of warranty wven if it was officialky less on paper than thd likes if Kia.

It seems its basically all smoke and mirrors so

    Kia's Warranty is 7 Years or 150000km.
Brother has a 08 ProCeed and up until his warranty ran out he had no trouble getting anything done under it. (Not much needed to , to be fair)
In the last year he had a keyfob replaced no hassle, small but still.

    Very much so.

In most cases though once the basic criteria are adhered to, the end result to the customer is the same.

Is the warranty in date by time? Yes
Is it valid by mileage? Yes
Is there a credible amount of service history? Yes
Is it a wear and tear component? No
Is it copromised by external influence/ abuse? No

And you have a successful claim.

Personally I havn't seen any manufacturer warranties that offer diminishing cover over time as mentioned by rex above.

Some companies have been know to outsource the final years of those long ish warranties to external firms who will make the hoops harder to jump through for the dealer but from the consumers point of view you will not be declined cover for something you are entitled to, once you've played by the rules.

The Mitsubishi 8 year one has the potential to be a bit hokey.

The fine print seems reasonably clear, that once you go over 100k kms or 5 years it is Mitsi Irl looking after you and not MMC and after 150k kms your cover is gone regardless. It is transferable between owners etc.

Anyway, Mitsi will have to sell a few cars first before anyone needs to worry about warranty :pac:. I wonder are they still painfully reliable? Seen an ad on faceballs today for a new Lancers, €3k up front, €250 a month for 3 years and €6k at the end. Attractive figures if you needed a new car and had no interest in cars whatsoever. The Lancer isn't horrific visually.

Can you give me a link to that ad please.
That's just €18000 all in including credit which seems very good value for a car in that class with a transferable 8 year warranty.
As you say the Lancer isn't bad to look at.

Coming to end of 5yr warranty on our Renault and put in a claim for a door lock as it was working intermittently. .....just booked it in and they did it no quibble including something I hadn't spotted (no plate lights)

That's an upgraded warranty, standard is 3 years/150k km on them. Was it much extra?

I see the lancers advertised at 20495
6150 deposit, 178 per month and 9250 final payment.

upping the monthly to 250 would result in deposit being reduced to roughly 3500 with same final payment.
I wouldn't expect any equity end of term with over 9k left to pay.

As long as you don't mind having a car that was launched 10 years ago and wasn't exactly class leading or cutting edge back then either.

I wouldnt object to a Lancer if i wanted something to cover miles in. The 150bhp diesel has a pretty nice drive

    They're just 1.6 petrol now.

Slightly off topic I know, but in the right colour (ie; not grey or silver!) and with the spoiler on the boot, I actually think the lancer looks nice.

(I do prefer the red, though)

Ah they're antique at this stage.

There's a lad in Galway selling a 162 he won in a raffle too.

Visually they look OK though. You'd take one over a Corolla!

Couple of hundred euro if I remember correctly. Cheaper than a new dsg box anyway :)

Not unless they have the sports kit on them, which they don't do any more. The brother had one with the 18 inch wheels and bits. Looked mean.

New Corolla is a decent looking car.
