    2 questions about the title.
If on a Diesel your EML light is on will it not affect your NCT emissions test because your engine is in limp mode and more then likely won't rev over 2500 or 3000.

Can someone recommend me a Bluetooth code reader and app that will work on a W211 Diesel..

A check engine light in a diesel is a cause for failure regardless of emissions. Diesel emissions testing is somewhat primitive so unless the car is running like a pig or producing a lot of visual smoke it will pass in that regard.

What year is the w211? Is there a chance that the early models weren't OBD compliant?

Check out WISH website, I got an obd reader that cancels out the eml on b6 Passat 1.9 tdi.
    Approximately €17.00 inc.delivery.
Has to be reset every few kilometres.

Would rather pick one up closer to home (Adverts etc). WISH is Chinese or Asian?
Want to get to the bottom of it.It came on last Summer and got it switched off but came back on a few weeks before xmas.Mechanic who switched it off said it was an electrical issue. Doesnt seem like a blocked egr as it was going gret until it came on.
Have a feeling its the M55 motor/Swirl flap issue on it.
Dont want to start chainging things in the hope of getting it right.

Ive seen diesel cars being tested with the eml on. Shouldn't be a problem if the car is running right in my experience. I've never seen one rejected purely because the light is on.

Tested but were they failed on the light being lit?
My reading of the NCT manual led me to believe its a fail as Toyota boi outlined above.

Mine wont go over 3000 revs which means they wouldnt be able to get enough revs to do emisions test.
    Or am I wrong there?

They may have continued the test but did they pass?

The nct testing manual, page 10, states
Preliminary Check before carrying Out Diesel Engine Smoke Test
    Engine Warning Light Ok?
NO On any item Decline to do Smoke Test until fault rectified.

So no, the car won't pass.

Yes they passed. The last fault code was with a temperature sensor which had no bearing on emissions. In the case of the OP it probably won't be done because it won't rev to 4500rpm.

Fair enough but the testers arent checking fault codes and manual is fairly clean cut in saying its a refusal so it wouldn't be great advice to tell the OP it'l pass.

Grand. So I can take it that it will be an automatic fail with the light on.
So any pointers to an bluetooth obd reader?
Was gonna go for this one -> http://www.adverts.ie/other/elm327-bluetooth-obd2-hh-diagnostic-interface/12149565

    Any thoughts?

I have a wired ELM327 cable that's always been good. I've not seen a wireless version like that before, the market is full of poor quality reps though which are very hit and miss, no idea if that is a rep or not.

As for software I use EasyOBDII, it's good, for free buy maybe a little basic, you can read and erase codes and read and record live data from a few different sensors. People say good things about the torque app if you are planning on getting a wireless unit.

Thanks. Was gonna get the Torque app.
Will do a little more digging with reviews etc before buying a reader.

Torque (free version) works great on an Android phone but very dodgy trying to connect Bluetooth with iPhone (up to 5, anyway; don't know after that.

Where are you based? If you're in Dublin or North Kidare I can put it on star and give you the fault codes(free). (N.B I'm not a mechanic, I can give you a list of codes as I have star but I can't fix it ok. What you do with the list is up to you.) If it's of any help to you let me know. BTW I have a friend who has a diesel car (VW)and it passes the nct every year with the eml on. Its something to do with swirl flaps, I can't remember exactly but regardless of any nct manual the light on is not an automatic fail.
