Went to auction. Half of what auctioneer said was uninteligible

Its a good thing my first language is English. I went to Wilsons auctions just to have a look. I took a Croatian friend with me who asked me is this guy speaking Swedish :pac:

The small bike and bric a brac auction was easy to understand but the guy at the Vehicle auction was talking so fast and slurring his words that I could only catch 60% of it.

I didn't buy anything. I went for fun and to learn something. Buying would be far down the road when I fully understand all the pitfalls.

Not knowing whether a car went for 25 euro, 250 euro or 2500 euro seems like a pitfall to avoid if I decide to make a bid in the future. So whats going on ? Is there a list of terminology only known to insiders or is it just something you have to get your ear used to ?

Nope, some auctioneers think that when they are doing an actual auction that they have to act like a texas cattle mart auctioneer.

There's science behind it. Google 'auction speak'

I went to Merlin car auctions few months ago, and being non-native English speaker, I must admit I didn't really understand much he was saying, but monitor on the side displaying current bid helped a lot.
Got the car and I'm more then happy as I managed to get it well below market value.

    What did you get Cinio?

2005 Honda CRV automatic with 60k miles.
Cost me €2500, but I exported it to Poland so I'm getting VRT refund of €1250.
Even considering cost of transporting and registering the car in Poland, I have it there ready for less than €2000.
And equivalent car there (but LHD) costs around €6000.

That sounds like you've stumbled upon a nice business model there . I can see the government refusing to refund vrt in the future .

Why? Theyre taking it in import

I don't think they will have any options to scrap vrt export refund scheme.
It was not the government who volunteerely introduced VRT export repayment scheme, but they were forced to do it.

2500 seems steep enough to pay at auction for that car too?

At that time, there wasn't a single one like that for sale in Ireland for less than €4k.
Even at the moment, it would be hard to find petrol automatic model with low mileage below €4k.

But I agree, that buying at auction is a risk. I could inspect the car, and hear the engine running, but couldn't drive it before buying, so f.e transmission could have been wrecked which would be a big expense in that car. Also I couldn't really check condition of suspension, etc....
But car turned out good. Only problem I had with it after purchase, was seized brake calliper, which cost me less than €100 to sort out.
