Looking for opinions on the DSG automatic transmission in the mark 7 VW Golf, especially in rush hour city traffic.

    Thanks

In almost 25 years of motoring it is in my experience the best transmission I've come across.

Six speed is ok, seven speed is problematic.

They're a joy to use. Well as joyful as it can be anyway

Toyota Auris hybrid and CHR worth a look too.

I don't know if standard or not, but DSG with auto hold and adaptive cruise control is excellent.
DSG is reliable once serviced on time.

Thanks for the replies. I've read it can suffer from jerkiness during slow moving traffic.

To be honest, I could live with that if it is a common side effect of an automatic, but I'd be more worried if it is a symptom of something more serious or likely to lead to something worse.

Again, looking for opinions on this as I am a complete novice at this kind of thing :o

If you get one, I'll guarantee you'll never drive a manual again. :)

Unless it's a very early mk7 it will have auto hold and adaptive cruise as standard.

The DSG boxes are nice, I wouldn't consider them jerky, certainly by comparison to the competition. Some of those DSG boxes went maintenance free too depending on the year which would be a big plus.

No jerkiness with DSG, it's extremely smooth. Coupled with auto hold and adaptive cruise (standard in all MK7 Golfs), the car practically drives itself.

I have a Mk 7 with seven speed DSG and auto hold and it's definitely one of the easiest and most comfortable cars I've ever driven, you just point it and go.
Gear changes are quiet and smooth and barely noticeable, from my experience of the car I'll never drive another manual and I'll probably buy another Golf to replace it.
I have been toying with the idea of replacing it with a newer Scirocco shortly but I'm slightly put off by the fact that it has a conventional hand brake instead of a nice neat little switch and a button for auto hold.

Never seen a problem with the 7 speed gearbox on mine, or in fact any problem at all since I bought the car. I drive a lot of rental cars when I travel on business in Europe and I always find myself comparing them to my own Golf for quality, comfort, drive etc and very few come close...

The Scirocco is around since 2009 and actually based on the Mk5/6 Golf platform so that's why it's technology is older. In reality you would be trading in a Mk7 Golf for a Mk5/6 Golf.

Were there not issues with the auto-boxes in cars that have lower than a 2.0 engine?

Thanks, I just think they look really smart (from the front anyway) and I drove one a while back and thought it felt quite nice to drive (apart from the fecking handbrake).
I had a mk1 Scirocco in my youth and I just have a hankering to drive one again...

I personally wouldn't switch from a MK7 Golf to a Scirocco. As Bazz said, it's based on the MK5 platform and it looks and feels it. Hence why you see the conventional handbrake and all the other tech in it is from the MK6 era. They tried to "MK7" it with similar looking radios and steering wheel but it's only skin deep. It'll feel like a step backwards.

They also made a hash of facelifting it imo.
