Claiming Tax Back

Hey all. So I was made redundant from my job back in November 2016. I've worked continuously since 2001. I've been reading up and talking to people and they said I should send in the p45 and p50 to the revenue and id claim back tax i paid. I also did all the forms and stuff with taxback.com. I'm just wondering if anyone else done with and if you actually got any actual money back. Call me cynical or jaded but I've been paying tax on wages for 16 years and find it hard to imagine theyd just hand some of it back without a catch. I know taxback will take a cut but sure fine. Its been about 2 weeks since i sent the letters to the revenue office and heard nothing back which is fair its a busy time and taxback told me they are processing the forms (ok?). I'm not proud and since a new job isnt presenting itself (yet. interviews are easy to get. the job isnt apparently) if they want to give me money, which ive already earned and had to fork over i will gladly take it

Yes you would be entitled to some tax back. I see you have an agent doing it for you they'll take a percentage of whatever you get back for their fee something like 5% of 10% I think. You could have easily done it yourself online or just called in to your local tax office e and done it.

For future reference whenever you get a new job set up your paye anytime account on revenue.ie, make sure you claim all your tax credits your entitled to. At the end of every year of employment you receive a P60 from your employer. Request a P21 balancing statement from revenue if you've overpaid tax they will refund you the difference. Also you can claim money back from health expenses etc. This can only be done for the last 4 years and can all be done online via you paye anytime account. There's millions being unclaimed every year as people are not aware they can do this.

I did all the p21 and the rest on the revenue website too, tho only a day or 2 ago, so still no word back. Ive probably done it all wrong. I'm onyl getting an estimate off taxback.com. if i dont think its worth the expense of them taking a cut i wont use them. I had no medical expenses thank god for the last 4 years except a dental cleaning every 6 months but i get that in Newry so i doubt i could claim on that.

Normally it'll be a week or so before you'll get you P21 statement and refund. Best of luck on the new job hunt.

As I said on another thread revenue are unlikely to repay you before 23 February in case you had another job during the year that has yet to file employer returns.
