Making a putter

Things are quiet in work so decided to make a putter. On the off chance someone can point me in the right direction for the question below.
Anyone any ideas on blackening the head I know some guys here refurbished scotties in the past. I could torch it but if I could get a black coating I'd prefer it to prevent rust.

    what material is it ?

By the way, fair play - great stuff.

    Nice job.

Assuming it is stainless steel, for a durable coating you could try anodizing it but this needs control of current and temperature to give you desired colour. See a youtube video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7g-azzYnMYo.

Easier to anodize aluminum and control color, but I'm assuming that's too light for a putter head.

    Good luck!!

    Cool,
Will you be able to use it in comp?
Did u use a current putter as a model?

Would you have to register and get approval for this with the R&A to use it in a comp.? Along the lines of 'Mickeys Mallet 1' or something :-)
    Nice work though

Nice one! Is it carbon or stainless?

I could only get my hands on mild steel so the same as any raw forged wedge.
I was aiming for a seemore Scotty hybrid.

I blued it last night using a hot bluing method, thanks to youtube.

great stuff - love the milling markings across face - a bit like the way some manufactures leave it.

Getting the shaft right will be interesting - unless you use on made already for that type of face.

It's just a straight shaft. I'm going to try an iron shaft first to make sure it's worth putting money into it. I can get an apollo black shaft in golf works for 10eu plus postage.
It's on the heavy side at the moment 400g ideally I'd like it at 350g.

You could drill holes - but to do that well may be tricky. And would have to be perfectly equal.

Remove a bit from face - too late now perhaps :)

A thin bit off the back too ?

How did you get COG for line - was it just mid point ?

Also what is white hole ?

I could definitely reduce the face height a couple of mill.
I think the white dot is a little big I didn't have a seemore putter to measure I can see the white either side of the shaft slightly.

It's not to late to machine further it's not hardened.

I calculated the shafts hole with trig based on a 70deg lie angle. The shaft passes through the X center of the face.
If anyone has a seemore could you tell me what width of the red dot? I made mine the width of the shaft.

    how does it play?

Excellent, well done. I made one years ago (30+) with Brass, it was for the father in law (broom handle) utilising two shafts to get the required length!!!

I'm not sure that's actually for playing competitively with? It just doesn't look like it'd meet the criteria for putters......

I'm sure it is if he's using it on the tour.

If it's a relatively square block then there's nothing there that disqualifies it (if they make it marginally wider than deep eg A>C).

    Got this on from golfworks
    A = 46mm and C= 42mm then the condition that A>C is met.

    A ≤ 7" = YES.

    2/3 of C = 28mm therefore B is ≥ 2/3C

    B=A so is ≥1/2 A

The only measurement left to check in D which I would doubt is greater than 2.5"
