Bought tickets to this yesterday. Still just €125 for 3 day camping plus fees, and I bloody can't wait. With a food village and a comedy lineup still to be announced this looks like it's shaping up to be a lovely new festival in the calendar.

Saw new secret weapon at knockanstockan in 2015. Unbelievable stuff.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭PabloAndRoy

Some great stuff in there. Whomadewho are a top notch live band. Also The Correspondents are excellent live.

Have not been to this festival before and am really looking forward to it. Just trying to convince a mate to go. Otherwise I will go on me own.

Saw them at Vantastival a few years back and they were bloody brilliant.

Haven't heard anything from him in years.

So I took the plunge on this one and bought a ticket this morning, but looks like I will be "Billy No Mates" for this as all my mates (and SO) are wusses and won't go. Don't think I have ever gone to a festival on own before. At least I won't get split up from the gang :)

Hmm - this looks interesting but there's not that much info on the website. I've no interesting in camping or glamping, so would look to stay in a hotel or B&B for the weekend; any nearby? Will there be shuttle buses to and from Portarlington town centre to the festival? And I may be blind but there doesn't seem to be any 3-day non-camping tickets? If anyone has more info I'd be most grateful :)

I am not sure about hotels/B&Bs, but I would image that there are some in the area. No idea about shuttle buses either, but it looks like about 6 minutes by taxi.

I have never heard of any festival with a 3-day non-camping ticket. Its normally along the lines of 3-day ticket including camping.. other than that separate daily tickets.

this lineup is surely the best kept secret of the year.

I would go for whomadewho alone.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,013 ✭✭✭MattD

I genuinely think this lineup is better than Sea Sessions, Indiependence or Castlepalooza. I'd have lumped Body and Soul in but for the announcement of Bonobo.

The only thing I would have loved to see added was some more Irish rock acts like Overhead the albatross or Girl Band. If anyone has any recommendations of same, I'd appreciate it!

But do any of you speak English? My pidgin is a bit rusty, but I think I understand what you are saying.

And is there are scarcity of punctuation marks in "sunny port"? I don't think I can survive a whole weekend without commas and full stops and other such fancy things. Maybe i am too posh for this weekend "living in a field" sh!t.

    its postponed!!!!!!
    sad focking day

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭zoobizoo

May as well say cancelled as it'd be impossible to rearrange same or similar line up.

Can only assume low ticket sales as once you've covered the costs and aren't looking at major debt, you keep things running to retain confidence for future years if you can.

Pity to see any festival not happening.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,501 ✭✭✭PabloAndRoy

Really disappointing. Postponement is not an option.

Really surprised that such a good lineup didn't attract decent sales

Edit: Post says they can't meet conditions of licence.

I had never heard of the festival until I heard a competition for it on Arena on Radio 1 a couple of weeks back.

The hinterland they are in the centre of hasn't a big population so they probably aren't relying on a local base. .

With these types of festivals, 500 extra people per day can make or break it but getting those extra people through the gates is difficult to do once you've sold to your "core" audience.

It's a competitive market out there.

It's a competitive market out there.

Festival has been building up a reputation over last few years. It's reasonably well known among small festival goers.

According to the Facebook post, they had difficulty meeting terms of the licence, whatever that could be. A few on Facebook seem to be blaming local council.

I had arranged irreversible time off work for this. Bitter taste in mouth.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭zoobizoo

I guess that's where their core audience is so.

Moving from a 1 day to a 3 day festival is a big ask for a small team.

People can blame the council all they like but I'd be surprised if those issues hadn't been hammered out months back when the licensing app went in. With two weeks to go though, most issues should have been dealt with.

    I stand to be corrected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,529 ✭✭✭Mike Guide 69

Well from what was relayed back to me by a relative in Portarlington, the issue was with the extension of the days, local residents in or around the garryhinch area expressed concerns about the numbers that could possibly attend over the 3 day period. Also issues were raised in terms of security, accomodation/camping facilities (toilets and all, yeah that came up). Seemed the council obviously didnt carry out a full term spec in advance of putting through the licence for the event..........

    NIMBY Ireland strikes again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,746 ✭✭✭zoobizoo

But that would be standard, no? security, accommodation and toilets for X amount of patrons is for the event team to know and cater for. It would be part of the event plan.

If security was on the low side, they could hire extra in - same with the toilets, particularly with two weeks to go.

You'll always get locals complaining so they need to be kept onside and informed and consulted.

In short we do not know exactly what happened. The facebook post states:
BARE in the Woods is a small, homegrown festival, run by a small core group of people and unfortunately, the limited time available for us to comply with the conditions on our licence, has realistically proven not enough.

Whatever that should mean... You could read that as "we ran out of time and didn't have ourselves well enough organised" or "the conditions on the licence were too onerous for us to comply with given the time available from the the licence being issued" or "we bit off more than we can chew and we stand to lose a shed load of money if we have to fork out to meet the licence conditions"

In short, we don't know exactly what happened, but the event is cancelled, trust is lost and the damage is done.

Offaly county council do have a document outlining the application process and pre-application expectations. http://www.offaly.ie/eng/Services/Planning/How_to_Make_a_Planning_Application/Guide_to_Making_a_Planning_Application/updates-2016/major-events-leaflet.PDF

I see that BARE is back next year, July 6th/7th 2018.
It's changing location, from Portarlington Laois, to Borris Carlow.

I've been at a few gigs in Borris house over the years, and it's a beautiful site.

Statement on their site, re last years mess

I'll probably pick up tickets when they go on sale in a few weeks.

Also, anyone that ordered tickets for the cancelled event are getting a €30 discount on the tickets early bird price .. 2 day festival for €70. Very happy to support these guys for that price.

    Anyone go/ing to this?

Would be interested to hear feedback in terms of price of pints (5 Euro), transport to & from (Kildare/Portarlington/Kilcullen etc. & Bagenalstown Train Stn.), sufficient security personnel/ticket checkers, sufficient quantity of jacks on site for both main gig and campsite, showers for campsite etc.?

I know the location quite well and one concern I had was in terms of gate-crashers hopping fences etc.; it's an incredibly wide open venue to control.

Any other issues, good or bad?

They've removed the review section from their FB Page.

Friends of mine went and said it was a very small turn out. Maybe a few hundred? About 100 camping. I thought it'd be much bigger. Apparently well organised though.

There were things lacking on organisational front.. ie showers.

Bit Foghorn Leghorn there. I'd say I'd say

So here's my run down of the festival.

Organisation wise it was good. Everything ran to as close to on time as possible. Sound was good, lighting. Some amazing bands. Good food and a pleasant surprise to see O'Hara's beer and not heineken/usual muck.

This was my first festival, and I get people want to get f*cked up and all, but not even leaving the camp site... what's that all about? The acts that we saw were great and deserved to have a bigger crowd to play to, but still gave it 110%.

The security was really good too. There was a bit of a ruckus on the Friday night where some lads managed to sneak in, hijack some tents and then threatened people with blades looking for cans. Security turfed them out, and kept throwing them out each time they did sneak back in, which was a lot of times. A few of the security team I spoke with said it was the worst festival for trouble they've seen in a while. We spent all our time at the music so didn't see any trouble apart from hearing all the commotion on the Friday night.

List of who I remember seeing:
    Kila 5/5
    Lost brothers 4/5
    Truck stop honeymoon 5/5
    Davina and the messengers 4/5
    Good is an astronaut 6/5
    Natty Wailer 5/5
    Cider wasps 4/5
    Craic appeal 4/5
    Exiles 4/5
Obie Trice & Swifty McVay 5/5

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,728 ✭✭✭Former Former

If a bunch of blade-wielding toerags managed to sneak in multiple times, I'd suggest that perhaps organisation and security weren't really that good?

If turnout was as low as I've heard, it's hard to see this coming back.
