Never actually bought them but had settled on fly pedals when I looked into this a while back.

Ended up getting back on the hybrid for the commute instead where I use a set of these http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bike-parts/pedals-pegs/boardman-hybrid-team-pedal and I can alternate between clipped in or not. (not spls obviously)

FWIW I have used these for years on my Hybrid

The advantage is that even when clipping in, you can do a fair amount of walking in MTB shoes as the cleats are semi-recessed. The platform is big enough to use with regular shoes, a stiffer sole (or SPD shoes) would be better if doing any great distance. Also, as they are double sided there's no pfaffing at lights to get clipped in.

All round my preferred option for commuting

You can just cycle in normal shoes with SPD-SLs, or at least I do quite a bit. Is there any reason you shouldn't?

None except the platform is quite small and I'd imagine fairly slippery if it's raining.

Not with my runners but with "fancy" shoes, it is mixed. My dress shoes, on a wet day, it might require me to sort of sit the ratchet/catch of the SPD-SL pedal with the heel behind it and the pedal on the midsole, but only if putting in a good bit of effort.
