Insurance quotes issue

Ringing around for insurance quotes before my renewal, on my 12yr old car, and I was informed by one insurance company today that they cannot quote me because my car has been flagged by Cartell.ie as a problem. They couldn't say what it was, and that I'd have to pay Cartell for a check and thus the information.

Weird thing is I've owned this car most its life, prior to me a sibling owned it. I know all its history, and I've never had this issue pop up before. I asked the insurance person was it age related, tax or nct related (all up to date) they said no but obviously only Cartell can provide me with the info that they have which is now preventing me from getting quotes.

I should add I got quotes from AXA, liberty, Allianz and 123.ie so it's not like I'm stuck for getting insured but a few places didn't quote and it's due to this Cartell flag/alert on my car.

Has anyone come across this before? And if I was to buy this Cartell check for 25e what exactly will it tell me that I don't already know?

Thanks for reading folks, hopefully someone can offer some insight!!

Probably an insurance write off, you will have to pay the money to see. Was the car originally a UK import, it will say this on the VLC/logbook.

Nope I'm the 3rd owner it's Irish, was registered here, my sibling was owner#2 I have the logbook here. Like I said I know the cars history as it's been in our family almost it's entire life. This is the first year it's been flagged as such. By a company who quoted me last year with no issue

Could it be possible at all that there is a car with a cloned reg out there that has been involved in an accident?

This is the only thing I can think it might be, can Cartell identify that it's a clone? In any case it's only been cloned since last February as it wasn't showing up as an issue for this insurance company then

No, Cartell won't tell if it's cloned.

To be honest, it's quite a stretch of the imagination to say that there is a car bearing your car reg that has been crashed and an insurance claim on it. This would require having an assessor look at the chassis number.

What make/model of car is it?

Could just be a clerical error.

Were the other quotes you got cheaper?

I wouldn't bother doing the Cartell report either on your own car you had for years.

Is it possible that Cartell's info is incorrect?

I looked at buying a car a few years ago and when I ran a history report on it, it came back as being a Cat D write off in the UK. After a bit more investigation with the car history company (not cartell btw) it ended up that the insurance company in the UK that recorded it as a write off made a typo with another car's registration which meant the wrong car was flagged as a write off. The insurance company sorted out their mistake and I was emailed a letter from them to that effect. I didn't buy in the end for other reasons in the end but when I ran a history report from two different companies a week or so later the car came up clean on both.

Thanks folks! I don't think I will bother getting the Cartell check. This is probably my last year with this car though so if I was to sell it, it might be an issue.

Got my insurance quote. Of course its not as cheap as I'd like it but it's grand :-)

If it was me i would run the check. otherwise you would never know.
It would kill me not to know if i was in your situation

Maybe send a mail to cartell telling them of the issue. They might do a check and see if it is an error at least.

Cartell inform me they have no additional information on my car and to check it again with the insurance company. Now the insurance agent was adamant the car was red marked by Cartell.ie, so it's likely there may have been a clerical issue somewhere. I might ring the insurance again tomorrow, just to see.

Also it is killing me not knowing!!! And Cartells reply has really baffled me
