Could be a stone caught between the disc and the dust guard.

There could be a lip on the disc, causing you to only get perhaps half of the available wear from the pads.

I heard taxi drivers complaining of high brake wear on the newer Avensis alright. (09 onwards.)

this happened before and sounded like a stone then the noise went but came back worse

It could be that the slider pins on the rear caliper(s) are seized slightly and so not fully disengaging when the pedal is released.

Yes the pads and discs are both much bigger on the front wheels than the back.

I know an owner of a 2011 Avensis and he had trouble with rear discs.
His mechanic suggested that the electric handbrake was the culprit.
He now disengages the brake manually rather than drive against it.

sorry lads its a corolla its a manual handbrake, he did tell me that there was issues with brake pads before there using a newer version ,

which makes me wonder they tell you that Toyota parts are best but is there better ones out there ?

I got pads here before: http://www.ebcbrakeshop.co.uk

EBC do performance brakes but the Edimax range are OEM spec. I found them to have more bite than the Avensis pads and they made a fraction of the brake dust which is great as I hate cleaning alloys. Cheaper than Mr T too.

My brother's Corolla had the same rear brake chewing problem.
It resulted in a burnt out clutch after 7 months.
I'll text him and find out what the problem was.
