I have a 2007 Jetta very little problems 310k kms on the clock i am doing 100miles x5 days a week and the car is now due tax€190(3months) and NCT soon and:
    Service
    Timing belt
    Trailing arm bushes
    Wishbone bushes
    Right ball joint
steering links and track rod ends
    Front disks and pads
    4 wheel alignment
    all costing over 1k
Also sometimes takes 2 tries to start when engine is hot may be motor or duel mass but never been a problem always starts.

or trade up to 2011 - 2012 car perhaps and Auto Diesel 1.6 maybe up north?
    8-10k budget

Spend the €1k and drive it till it dies. You'd get nothing for it now as it is but it's definitely worth fixing.

I think so too. You've a good reliable car, that needs some tlc, but you know its history, faults and how its been looked after.

Trade up and you could be kicking youself for buying a heap of trouble.
