Thinking of buying a passat diesel 07-08 anybody know if they are a reliable model? the price comparison to an audi a4 of that vintage is a good bit lower but maybe thats because its a VW and not an AUDi or maybe they arent a reliable car... any qualified advice much appreciated

The A4 would have cost a good deal more than a similar Passat when new so it's only natural that there would still be some sort of price difference at that age.

Try and get a 08 if you can as 2005 to 2007 Passats had niggly problems from launch. The electric parking brake can give trouble but in most cases it's just the button. Steering racks also gave problems and expensive enough to fix. Try and avoid 1.9 TDi engines with the BXE engine code as these had a reputation for the conrod to destroy the engine block. 2.0 TDi PD engine had injector problems which should have been replaced under a recall at this stage but the oil pump balance shaft was a big problem so make sure there is evidence that it was rectified on any example you are looking at otherwise it's a ticking time bomb. 2.0 TDi CR engine from 2008 onwards replaced the older engines and is probably the best engine but they do suffer from ERG valve problems.

Thanks for the detail, overall do you think i should avoid or in general are they a reliable car?

Your buying a 10 year old car so a lot will boil down to the particular car your looking at. There are a lot of tired old dogs for sale so it can be a mine field.
