Buying new car - Insurance Transfer Query

I'm trading in my current car for a new 171 Car next week and will be ringing up the insurance company to transfer my insurance policy over on the day before picking it up.

Now this might be obvious / simple but it's my first time buying a new car so my question is what happens if I come across a check point or the guards stop me after I pick up the new car but before I receive the new insurance papers in the post?

There's a zero tolerance for no insurance so in the unlikely event I did get stopped while I would be insured how would they know I'm insured... I'd have no proof until the papers arrive (unless the dealership gives you sometime?) or would I just get asked to present insurance papers within 10 days to the station which would be perfect.

Like I said I'm sure very obvious to you all but I'm only driving 4 years and it's my first time getting a new car.

    Yours

Driver who doesn't want their new 171 taken away first day :D

Once you have the reg ring your insurance company to transfer insurance at your arranged pick up time. Keep a receipt from the dealer in the car with you.

It's highly unlikely any guard would make an issue unless you weren't insured.

Your current policy actually covers you to drive the new car once you have transferred the policy. If you are stopped, you simply tell the Garda that its a brand new car, that you have transferred the insurance and show them your current policy document. They may ask you to produce the new one once you get it but it'll actually have the same policy number and details on it, the only difference will be the effective date and the reg number of the car.
